Technology keeps advancing, creating new challenges for the safety industry to solve. Lithium-ion is one of the latest examples.
Safety is not a problem you solve once. Technology changes. The way things fail changes with it. Safety has to keep up, not just do more of what worked last time. Right now the clearest example is lithium-ion. A battery fire is not a normal fire. A normal fire needs fuel, heat and oxygen, and taking one away stops it. A battery in thermal runaway makes its own heat and does not need outside oxygen, so the usual levers do nothing. It can start on its own, from damage, a fault, or overcharging. It vents toxic, flammable gas before there are even flames. And putting the flames out does not end it, because energy stays trapped in the cell and can reignite it hours later. This year ISO created Class L, a fire class just for lithium-ion, the first real change to fire classification in years. A fire class tells you how to fight a fire. A new one means the old ways no longer work. So the tools change too. Off-gas detection that picks up the gas a failing cell vents before there is a flame. Thermal imaging that sees a cell heating before it spreads to its neighbours. And suppression technologies that cool the cells, rather than only knock the flame down and let it come back. The technology always arrives first. The safety has to catch up.
