🇳🇱 The Netherlands remains one of Europe's strongest innovation ecosystems but the ERA Country Snapshot 2025 shows that maintaining leadership now requires renewed investment and strategic adaptation. 🚀 The ERA Country Snapshot 2025 presents a balanced picture: the Netherlands continues to excel in research quality, Open Science and innovation, while recognising that its competitive advantage is gradually narrowing and requires decisive policy action. 🔬 The Netherlands continues to lead in European research infrastructures, with major investments in DiSSCo ERIC, the Einstein Telescope, and new national research facilities, alongside the launch of the Dutch Tulip Fund to attract world-class researchers. 📖 The country further strengthened Open Science through its national CoARA Chapter, a 95% Open Access publication rate, and a new Open Science NL programme supporting citizen science, AI, replication studies and research infrastructures. 💡 Knowledge valorisation remains a strategic priority through the Faculty of Impact programme and the Building the Tech Champions of Tomorrow agenda, aimed at strengthening start-ups, scale-ups and research commercialisation. 🤖 The Netherlands is investing heavily in future competitiveness through a €200 million AI Factory, a new industrial policy focused on semiconductors, AI and biotechnology, and €230 million for the IPCEI on Advanced Semiconductor Technologies. 📊 Despite these strengths, the report highlights that the Netherlands is gradually losing part of its innovation advantage. Growth in innovation performance has been slower than the EU average, public R&D investment has declined in recent years, and the 2025 European Semester calls for higher public and private R&D investment, particularly in strategic technologies and late-stage scale-ups. The report also notes that higher education budgets were reduced by more than €500 million in 2025, creating additional pressure on the research system. 💡 For ERA_FABRIC, the Netherlands demonstrates that even Europe's innovation leaders cannot rely on past success. Sustaining globally competitive innovation ecosystems requires continuous investment in research, strategic technologies, talent and knowledge valorisation, while adapting governance to emerging geopolitical and technological challenges. https://lnkd.in/dha_5_ks #ERAFABRIC #EuropeanResearchArea #InnovationEcosystems #ResearchAndInnovation #KnowledgeValorisation #OpenScience #ArtificialIntelligence #Semiconductors #ResearchInfrastructure #InnovationPolicy

Three years ago, Q-Con started with a simple idea. Europe doesn't just need breakthrough quantum research. It needs an ecosystem. An ecosystem where researchers meet entrepreneurs. Where startups connect with investors. Where industry learns from academia. Where governments, defence, finance and space organisations work together. And where international collaboration helps Europe build sovereign quantum capabilities. That vision has shaped Q-Con from the very beginning. This September, we're taking the next step. For the first time, Q-Con Quantum Conference will feature two stages and more than 50 speakers. 🎤 Inspire Stage Discover bold ideas, inspiring stories and strategic discussions about where quantum technologies are heading and how they will transform business and society. Hosted by Miłosz Wojtyna. 🔬 Deep Dive Stage For those who want to go beyond the headlines. More technical. More practical. More depth. Fewer buzzwords. Hosted by Jakub Tomasz Gnyp (who also hosted the very first edition of Q-Con). But Q-Con has never been just about a conference. It's about building a community, strengthening Europe's quantum ecosystem and creating the partnerships that will shape the next generation of sovereign technologies. If you'd like to be part of that journey, we'd love to welcome you to Gdańsk. 📅 11 September 2026 🎟️ qcon.tech/tickets Kainos, University of Gdansk | Invest in Pomerania

🌍 What do the ERA Country Snapshot 2025 reports tell us about Europe's innovation future? Europe is no longer focusing only on funding research—it is increasingly investing in building resilient innovation ecosystems. Across EU Member States, Associated Countries and enlargement partners, common priorities are emerging: 🏛️ Stronger R&I governance through new agencies, strategies and coordinated policy frameworks. 💡Greater emphasis on knowledge valorisation, technology transfer and stronger science-business collaboration to turn research into economic and societal impact. 📖 Open Science has become mainstream, with Open Access, FAIR data, EOSC and research assessment reforms now embedded in national policies. 🤖 Strategic investment in AI, semiconductors, quantum technologies, biotechnology, cybersecurity and advanced materials is reshaping national innovation agendas. 🌍 International cooperation through Horizon Europe, European Partnerships, research infrastructures and researcher mobility remains a cornerstone of competitiveness. At the same time, the snapshots reveal recurring challenges: ⚠️ Insufficient public and private R&D investment ⚠️ Weak science-business linkages ⚠️ Limited private-sector innovation ⚠️ Talent shortages and researcher career challenges ⚠️ Persistent regional disparities in innovation capacity For ERA_FABRIC, the most important conclusion is that there is no single path to innovation leadership. Countries start from very different positions, but the most successful ecosystems increasingly share the same characteristics: ✅ effective governance ✅ strong collaboration across stakeholders ✅ excellent research infrastructures, ✅ vibrant entrepreneurship ✅ knowledge valorisation ✅ and place-based innovation strategies that build on regional strengths. 💡 Europe's future competitiveness will depend not only on how much we invest in research, but on how effectively we connect researchers, businesses, governments, investors and citizens into resilient innovation ecosystems capable of translating knowledge into sustainable economic and societal impact. This is precisely the transformation that ERA_FABRIC aims to promote. #ERAFABRIC #EuropeanResearchArea #InnovationEcosystems #ResearchAndInnovation #KnowledgeValorisation #OpenScience #HorizonEurope #InnovationPolicy #SmartSpecialisation #RegionalInnovation
