A recent 2026 report by the Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) reveals a concerning reality: 75% or 3 out of 4 public school teachers in the Philippines are teaching subjects outside their actual areas of specialization. Despite the government's efforts to create new teaching posts, a massive shortage of around 23,000 teachers forces schools to assign educators to unfamiliar subjects. Your child can pass math... and still be years behind. That's the uncomfortable truth hiding behind one number: 75. In the Philippines, 75 is a passing grade. Yet in TIMSS 2019, Filipino Grade 4 students ranked last among 58 countries in math — scoring 297 out of 1,000. Many of those students didn't fail in school. They passed. Because passing isn't the same as proficiency. A report card tells you whether a child passed. It doesn't tell you whether they truly understand. And every hidden gap grows: Number sense → Fractions → Algebra → Future opportunities. That's why the question parents ask has to change. Not: "What grade did my child get?" But: "What does my child actually understand?" You can promote a child to the next grade. You cannot promote understanding. The good news: learning gaps can be found — and fixed. As the study coordinator for the Public Policy and Politics Study Circle (LSPK), I am issuing a policy recommendation/brief. In response to Constitutional Court Decision (putusan MK) No. 3/2024, which ruled that compulsory basic education must be funded by the state, without distinguishing between public and private schools, and given its implications such as the fact that private school teachers no longer need to worry about their livelihoods depending on tuition fees. I have drafted this recommendation specifically for Muhammadiyah, as the civil society and religious organization in Indonesia that operates the largest number of private schools. Therefore, it is appropriate for Muhammadiyah to join in supporting the Constitutional Court’s decision.

What do we want our education system to create: children who can remember information or children who know what to do with it? The more time I've spent in classrooms, the more I've realised that reading is only the beginning. If children leave school able to read but unable to question, reason, express an opinion or connect ideas, I think we've missed the point. For me, foundational literacy has never been just about helping children recognise words on a page. It's about helping them understand what they're reading, ask questions, make connections and gradually become independent thinkers. I often say that education should create thinkers, not translators. Today's children are growing up in a world where information is available everywhere. What will help them navigate that world isn't the ability to repeat information. It's the ability to understand it, question it and use it thoughtfully. MSU Organizes “MSU FRIENDS” to Strengthen Listening Skills and Create a Safe Space for Student Well-Being Mahasarakham University organized the “MSU FRIENDS” project to strengthen basic counseling skills among student volunteers. The program trained students to listen without judgment, recognize warning signs, provide appropriate encouragement, and refer friends to professional support when needed. It also supports the University’s goal of creating a safe and caring environment for all students. UPDATE: The Ministry of Education has announced reforms to strengthen teacher training, with new students joining Teachers Training Colleges (TTCs) from September 2026 set to undertake a five-year programme, up from the current three years. Minister of Education Joseph Nsengimana made the announcement during a conversation on RBA on Saturday, noting that the move aims to equip teachers with stronger skills and enhance learning outcomes across #Rwanda.

The Philippines is encouraging children and siblings of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) to apply for college scholarships worth up to Dh3,600 (Php60,000) annually.
