Every vehicle program brings back the same question: how much physical testing can we safely stop doing? On September 2, I will be in São Paulo, flying in from Michigan, for the 24th SAE BRASIL Symposium on Testing and Simulation in Mobility Engineering. Engineering directors from General Motors, Mercedes-Benz Trucks , Mahle, and Multittech will debate whether they are still investing in proving grounds and how that connects to their simulation teams. Volvo Trucks, Renault, IAV and Volkswagen will discuss how far simulation-driven design has actually gone in practice. Then applied cases from Embraer, Marcopolo, Scania Latin America and Apollo Tyres. This is not a technology conversation. It is capital allocation, development cycle time, and technical liability. The companies that get it right compress development. The ones that treat physical and virtual as competing budgets pay for both. BMW's new Woodruff plant in South Carolina is nearing completion and will begin series production of AI-driven Gen6 high-voltage batteries for the fully-electric BMW iX5 by December 2026. The facility was constructed on a 315-acre former peach farm, with steel erection completed in June 2024 and production equipment installation substantially finished by March 2025. - The 1.4 million sq ft plant integrates advanced digital infrastructure, including AI and virtual reality training, to ensure zero-defect battery production. - Over 300 employees and 250 robots will operate in the facility, which emphasizes sustainability by running without fossil fuels during normal operations. - The plant is part of BMW’s broader regional battery production network, supporting local supply chains and vehicle assembly nearby. This project highlights rapid, tech-driven construction and commissioning in automotive manufacturing, reinforcing South Carolina’s role as a key hub for electromobility production.
