The Journal of Clinical Oncology just dropped Issue 18 June 20, 2026. 📖 And for anyone working in oncology clinical research, this issue deserves your full attention. Two areas stand out for me personally this week: 🔵 Renal Cell Carcinoma Dr Rana R. McKay features in this issue with data that continues to shape how we think about frontline RCC management. Having managed a Renal Cell Carcinoma PK/PDA study at Med Tricare Clinical Research, I have seen firsthand what running an RCC trial looks like from the site side the patient profile, the complex eligibility criteria, the monitoring demands. When I read RCC data in JCO, I don't just read the hazard ratios. I think about the site coordinators who screened those patients at 7am. The monitors who flew out for surveillance visits. The TMF teams ensuring every adverse event was captured in real time. The science published in JCO is only as strong as the clinical operations infrastructure behind it. 🟠 Brain Tumours Dr Patrick Y. Wen's work in this issue touches on one of the most difficult spaces in all of oncology. Brain tumours remain among the deadliest cancers resistant to almost all conventional and novel treatments. Yet the data emerging in 2026 from personalised DNA vaccines in glioblastoma to precision-guided therapy in diffuse midline gliomas signals something is shifting. For clinical operations teams working on neuro-oncology trials, these studies bring unique challenges: CNS eligibility criteria, neurological assessment scheduling, imaging protocol complexity, and patient vulnerability unlike almost any other oncology indication. Running these trials well requires more than GCP compliance. It requires genuine clinical understanding. The next bottleneck in precision oncology For much of the past two decades, the focus of precision oncology has been on developing better therapies. And rightly so. Targeted therapies, immunotherapies, ADCs, radioligand therapies, cell therapies, and RNA-based approaches have transformed what is possible for patients. But as therapies become more sophisticated, a different challenge is emerging. The question is no longer only: - "Can we develop the therapy?" Increasingly it is: - "Can we identify the patients most likely to benefit?" Many of the most important developments in oncology today are not new drugs, but advances in clinical trial methodology, translational research, response assessment, real-world evidence, patient-reported outcomes, and biomarker-driven patient selection. In other words, the bottleneck is gradually shifting from treatment development alone to evidence generation and clinical decision support. Better therapies remain essential. But better therapies are only half of precision medicine. The other half is understanding the biological states that predict therapeutic response.
