What One Simple Egg Cup Taught Me About Industrial Design Lesson 1: Simplicity Is Often the Result of Complexity When I started designing my egg cup, Delicate, I wasn't trying to create a simple object. I wanted it to scoop an egg directly from the carton, lower it into boiling water, and then move straight from the pot to the breakfast table. I loved the idea of making it from oak, even though metal, or even plastic or silicone, would have been the more practical choice. For a long time, I explored a spoon-like form that could support all of these functions. But the more I tried to make the product do everything, the more I felt I was losing what had attracted me to the idea in the first place. Would it become a better tool, but a less beautiful object? Eventually, the search for the right technical solution led to a much simpler design: a solid oak cylinder with a handle. Ironically, it wasn't the original idea that shaped the final product. It was the compromises, the manufacturing challenges, and the constant process of removing unnecessary complexity. I still love minimalism, but I'm equally inspired by brutalism. The very first version of Delicate reflected that influence, with three stepped levels inside the cup to hold different egg sizes. Looking back, this project taught me one of the lessons I return to most often: Simplicity isn't where a design starts. It's often where it ends.

What you see on the surface is often decided long before the final product takes shape. Research across materials and manufacturing shows that microscopic structure, fibre composition, surface preparation, friction behaviour, and production methods can all influence how a product ultimately looks, feels, wears, and performs. That means aesthetics are not purely visual. A smooth finish, durable surface, comfortable fabric, or clean weld can be the visible result of decisions made at a structural level that the user will never see. 4 development oversights that create avoidable risk in decoration projects A decoration project rarely becomes difficult because of one major mistake. More often, complexity builds through a series of smaller decisions made too early, too late or without the full technical context. Here are four development oversights that often create unnecessary pressure later in the process: 1. Evaluating decoration primarily by appearance A finish may look right visually, but it also has to perform within the realities of filling, transportation, handling and repeatable production. 2. Treating sample approval as proof of production readiness A successful sample confirms that a concept can be achieved. It does not automatically confirm that the same result can be reproduced consistently at scale. 3. Separating design intent from manufacturing input for too long When engineering and production considerations enter the process too late, adjustments become more disruptive and less efficient. 4. Choosing a decoration route before defining the full project context The right technology depends not only on the desired look, but also on the product, market, functional requirements and production expectations. WHO PAYS FOR THE PROCESS Design Miami opens in Miami Beach this December, and the easy read on collectible design is that it is the opposite of industrial design. Editions of eight, no cost target, prices set by scarcity. It is also one of the very few places an unproven process gets paid for at all. The Panton Chair took thirty nine years to arrive at the material that finally worked. First model 1960, a plaster cast. Cold pressed fibreglass reinforced polyester in the mid sixties. Serial production in 1968 in polyurethane foam. Halted in 1979 on durability. Back in 1983. Not made in polypropylene until 1999. Almost none of that was mass production. Most of it was somebody continuing to pay for an object that could not yet be manufactured properly. A concept phase team cannot invent a process. It can only select one. Which means the menu you are choosing from in 2026 was funded by people making very small numbers of things a decade or two ago. A decoration project can look perfectly straightforward on paper — until production starts. A finish behaves differently than expected. A design needs adjustment. A material combination creates limitations that were not obvious at the concept stage. In many cases, these are not really production problems. They are development decisions that needed to be made earlier. Before a project moves into production, we look at the complete context: the product itself, the intended market, the desired finish, the requirements of filling and transportation, and the technologies that can deliver the design consistently at scale. This early technical work may be less visible than the final decoration, but it has a direct impact on what happens later. Fewer unexpected changes. Faster approvals. More predictable production. A result that stays closer to the original design intent. This is why engineering is part of the project from the beginning — not something we bring in when a problem appears. Good production solves problems efficiently. INDUSTRIAL DESIGN: a product lives or dies at the seam ——— Run a thumb across anything well made until you hit the spot where one material hands off to another and you’ll see if someone truly cared about it. Where soft fabric gives way to a hard shell, or two panels meet. That handoff can make or break the product. Choosing a beautiful material is easy. Holding the border is the hard part. Where a coating lifts after a month. Or two colors that looked fine together on a screen suddenly clash in real daylight. That edge has to survive the factory and years of restless thumbs and still look like somebody meant it. One junction handles tolerances, assembly, wear, and touch at once and still looks intentional. Getting it right takes decisions a hand feels before the eye catches them. A good transition disappears. You run a thumb across it and feel one object, not materials fighting over the edge. Good industrial design does not hide complexity everywhere. Panel gaps are the most looked-at lines on any car and almost nobody chooses them. They are usually a residue. The bonnet has to open, so there is a gap. The doors have to open, so there are four more. The tailgate needs its own. Each is settled by a different requirement at a different moment, and the bodyside ends up carrying whatever those decisions left behind. This study consolidates them. One deep channel runs the length of the flank at waist height, and every opening on the car uses it as its datum, so the shadow of that single groove is the only interruption in the surface. Above it and below it the panels are enormous and calm. That is not a styling choice you can make late. Shutline strategy is decided by the opening plan, the sealing strategy and the press line, all of which are locked in architecture. By the time a surface modeller is refining highlights, the gaps are already where they are going to be, and the only remaining question is how to make peace with them. Decide the line first and the surfaces inherit a discipline. Decide the openings one at a time and the surfaces inherit a compromise. Concept design study generated at DEPIX.
