The US needs 120,000 new pilots in the next 20 years. The threat doesn't wait that long. Merlin CTO Tim Burns said it plainly at the RAeS Future Air and Space Defense Summit last week: mission demand is growing geometrically. The pilot pipeline isn't. That's not a failure of people. It's a description of a structural problem. His framing, Artificial Airmanship, is worth sitting with. Aviation has never been about machines. It's about disciplined decision-making under uncertainty. Autonomous systems have to inherit the judgment, not just the mechanics. Wisdom, not just intelligence. I've been writing about this pattern for months, applying what I learned and taught in the cockpit, to AI Governance. Three of these papers map directly to what Burns described: 1. Autonomy is a Range You Earn (kellerai.blog/earned-range) — Autonomy isn't a switch. It's an envelope you expand through verified performance history. Burns said it. ETOPS proved it decades ago. 2. The Trust Dial is the mechanism he was describing without naming it. 3. Air power is scaling faster than pilots can. Merlin CTO Tim Burns joined the Royal Aeronautical Society's Future Air and Space Defense Summit, where the conversation kept returning to one question: how quickly can we scale and integrate autonomous technologies in a way that's operationally credible, trusted by commanders, and accepted by allies? His answer centers on “Artificial Airmanship,” the idea that autonomy in aviation shouldn't simply replicate mechanical execution. It needs to inherit the judgment of experienced pilots: the trade-offs, the decision-making under uncertainty, and the discipline that makes aviation safe. Trusted autonomy means learning how experienced pilots actually think, bounding and assuring system behavior, and maintaining human accountability throughout. The F-35 is designed around low observability and sensor fusion rather than traditional kinematic performance. Its internal weapons bays preserve stealth while reducing drag in contested environments. The AN APG-81 AESA radar distributed aperture system and electro optical targeting system integrate into a single fused picture, giving the pilot comprehensive situational awareness. Data links allow information sharing across platforms, extending its role beyond a single aircraft to a networked node. Variants introduce different trade offs, including the lift fan system in the F-35B for short take off operations. 🇫🇷🛩️ Thales and AURA AERO subsidiary, AURA M, joined forces to develop and introduce a long-range ISR drone for the French military. The solution is called the Enbata drone: 👉 Part of the Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) initiative 👉 A multi-mission platform built around fly-by-wire controls and an open architecture designed to support a wide range of payloads 👉 Will integrate Thales’ AirMaster C airborne radar, which features a compact active electronically scanned array and onboard AI The Enbata drone is scheduled for its maiden flight this year.

Airbus has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Kawasaki Heavy Industries to explore a Japanese anti-submarine warfare variant of the U950 Eurodrone, Europe's first Large Long Endurance Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS). Japan has held observer status in the Eurodrone programme since 2023. Under the MoU, the two companies will analyze options for the design, development, and commercialization of a future Japanese maritime version, including integration of Japanese sensors and effectors and potential workshare for Japanese industry in production and sustainment. The stated aim is for Japan to operate the Eurodrone sovereignly and without restrictions, should it decide to acquire the system. Built to monitor large maritime areas, the Eurodrone offers very long flight endurance and can carry a high mission payload, including sonobuoys and torpedoes for anti-submarine warfare. With up to 2.3 tonnes of mission payload (excluding fuel), it can stay airborne for up to 40 hours and is designed for full integration in civil airspace. The Eurodrone is a four-nation programme of Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, led by OCCAR, and is currently under development with first flight scheduled for 2029. India and Japan hold observer status.

A U.S. Air Force Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II (tracked under hex/registration 13-5067) transmitted a Squawk 7700 code, indicating an in-flight emergency. Operating near the Gulf of Oman, the jet rapidly descended to 15,000 feet. The Air traffic controllers prioritized the aircraft, allowing a safe diversion. The aircraft landed securely at Al Dhafra Air Base in the UAE. In open-source flight tracking, 13-5067 often appears as a generic or "false" registration hex code utilized by multiple US military F-35s operating outside the United States.
