What can a personalized clinical training experience mean for a future physician? In this interview, Morehouse School of Medicine student and future physician Kusona Fortingo reflects on how the More in Common Alliance partnership between Morehouse School of Medicine and CommonSpirit Health helped shape her medical education. During her neurology rotation at CommonSpirit Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Kusona gained hands-on clinical experience in a setting that allowed for individualized mentorship and learning. As the sole student on her rotation, she was able to build confidence, strengthen her clinical skills and deepen her understanding of patient care. Now preparing to begin residency, Kusona shares how the experience influenced her journey and offers advice to students pursuing careers in medicine: "Don't be afraid to try. Don't be afraid to fail. You don't know what you're holding yourself back from." As a first-generation physician, Jeff Davis, DO, knows how important guidance can be. Today, he serves as a mentor to students at A.T. Still University, including a first-generation student organization that helps future physicians navigate the challenges and opportunities of medical education. "The ideas they come up with and the things they want to do to help their fellow students have been very inspiring." Dr. Davis believes the future of osteopathic medicine is bright, and he's excited to help the next generation get there. BREAKING NEWS: Xavier University College of Medicine is officially the first Jesuit College of Osteopathic Medicine in the country. The Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation has approved Xavier to start training the next generation of osteopathic doctors in fall 2027. “Today we celebrate a transformative milestone extending far beyond Xavier’s campus,” said President Colleen M. Hanycz. “Our new medical college represents Xavier’s direct response to a critical national need for primary care physicians, built on a curriculum tailored to the evolving demands of modern medicine.” “We are now focused on inviting a pioneering class of medical students, who are energized by and ready to embrace Xavier’s mission and ensuring they are uniquely equipped to embark on bigger lives through their chosen profession.”

Officially the first. As of today, Xavier University College of Medicine is the first Jesuit College of Osteopathic Medicine to be approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation. This means we’re approved to start training the next generation of osteopathic doctors to keep our communities healthy starting in fall 2027. “We have built a program designed to meet the needs of today’s students and the evolving demands of our world, and we are now ready to welcome our first class of exceptional future physicians who lead with compassion,”said XUCOM Founding Dean Dr. Steven Halm, DO, FAAP, FACP, FACOI. “Our communities urgently need these physicians, and soon Xavier will be educating the leaders who will rise to meet that need.”
