There has never been a better time to join an AI startup. And you don't have to be looking for work to take one seriously. Most of the best engineers I've hired weren't. By the time a company is "hiring publicly," the initial team is set and the early equity is spoken for. The people who actually shaped the product got in because someone made an intro long before the headlines. The standard advice is to optimize for title, or comp, or the name brand on your resume. For a lot of people that is exactly right, and I don't say that as an insult. But some people cannot make peace with that. They want to be one of the five people who decided what the thing was, not one of the five thousand who maintained it. If that's you, the calculation is different, because over a career the only thing that has ever compounded for me is what I learned and who I learned it from. Title, comp, and brand all reset the day you change jobs. What you learned and who you know does not. Right now the fastest learning environment for builders is a small AI company with top founders, real users, and hard problems. You will touch models, data, evals, the product, the customer, and the go-to-market in the same week. And there are things you will learn there that you will never get the chance to learn at a big company, because at larger organizations you never get the chance to move out of your lane.
