Some health trends come and go. Others can make health feel more tangible, encourage better conversations, and help patients take a more active role in their care. I shared my perspective with MDLinx on the trends that may be worth paying attention to. “Devices that track activity, heart rate, and sleep have made health feel more tangible to people. Even if the data is not always perfectly precise, it has opened the door to conversations that we were not having as often before. Every wellness account on my feed is suddenly talking about VO2 max like it's the one number that predicts whether you'll be alive in 20 years. They're not entirely wrong. A cohort study of over 122,000 adults found the least-fit group had roughly 5 times the all-cause mortality of the elite-fit group. That's a bigger effect size than most things we actually screen for at a physical. Here's the physician reality check nobody's adding to the trend: What VO2 max actually predicts well: all-cause mortality risk, cardiovascular fitness, how well you'll tolerate a serious illness or surgery if one ever hits. What it does NOT predict: whether you'll develop a specific disease, your metabolic health on its own (you can have a decent VO2 max and still have poor insulin sensitivity), or how you'll feel day to day. What it doesn't require: a $200 lab test. A field estimate from a well-run 12-minute test or a properly calibrated fitness watch gets you most of the useful information. What actually moves it: zone 2 cardio most weeks, plus 1 to 2 harder interval sessions. It declines 5 to 10% per decade left alone, but stays trainable well into your 60s and 70s. The number is useful. Obsessing over tracking it is not the same thing as training it. Save this before you buy another wearable to measure a number you're not actually training.

Nobody's talking about this in our profession. But they should be. 🔍 The same AI boom powering the tools we use every day is quietly creating a public health crisis — and it's one that lands directly in our treatment rooms. Data centers. 🖥️ Hyperscale facilities now run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, generating constant artificial light, EMF exposure, noise pollution, and heat. That all-night lighting disrupts the natural circadian rhythms of the body — including melatonin production and sleep-wake cycles. Communities living near these facilities are experiencing rising rates of insomnia, chronic stress, anxiety, and fatigue. Research links this circadian disruption to increased risks of obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, anxiety, depression, and mood disorders. Sound familiar? 🤔 These are exactly the conditions walking into our treatment rooms every single day. The client who can't sleep. The one carrying tension they can't explain. The person whose inflammation won't resolve no matter what we try. Some of them aren't just stressed — their nervous systems are being disrupted at an environmental level we can't see or feel. 😬 Here's where it gets directly relevant to what we do: EMF exposure from data centers and wireless infrastructure may affect the human circadian rhythm and induce inflammation — the same inflammation we work to reduce through massage and light therapy. Artificial light at night has been linked to elevated breast cancer risk, and rotating night-shift studies suggest chronic exposure to artificial light may act as a carcinogen. This isn't fringe science. This is peer-reviewed research published in 2025 and 2026. 📊 So what does this mean for us as practitioners? It means the therapeutic work we do — reducing cortisol, regulating the nervous system, using targeted light therapy to restore healthy cellular function — is becoming more important, not less. As the world gets noisier, brighter, and more electromagnetically polluted, the human body needs skilled, intentional intervention more than ever. We are not just relaxation providers. Most healthcare waits for decline, then manages it. You arrive with fatigue, weight that won't move, and sleep that broke somewhere around 43. Your labs come back "normal." You're told to manage your stress and check back in a year. And the erosion continues — unaddressed — until it's finally severe enough to earn a diagnosis and a prescription. A Health Lesson I Wish I Had Learned Earlier Over the past few months, I found myself on an unexpected health journey. I consulted specialists across neurology, cardiology, ENT, and other disciplines while dealing with symptoms such as numbness, persistent discomfort, stress and elevated blood pressure. I was prescribed medication for hypertension and advised that I was in the pre-diabetic range. Despite multiple consultations and treatments, the symptoms persisted. Then, a few days ago, I met a senior consultant physician who, during our very first consultation, suspected a different root cause. He recommended a simple cervical spine X-ray (AP & Lateral views) along with routine blood tests. The diagnosis: Loss of Cervical Lordosis. As I reflected on the findings, I realized that the condition may have been influenced by years of: ✅ Prolonged desk work with poor sitting posture ✅ Extended hours in front of computers without adequate breaks ✅ Incorrect neck posture while using mobile devices ✅ Ignoring small warning signs that gradually developed into larger issues The encouraging news is that once the root cause was identified, I was advised on corrective posture, ergonomic work practices, neck care exercises, and proper sleeping habits. I have now started focusing on these changes as an important part of my recovery journey. I am sharing this experience because many professionals, especially those of us who spend long hours at desks, may experience symptoms such as neck pain, headaches, numbness, fatigue, or discomfort without realizing that posture and ergonomics could be significant contributing factors. A Few Simple Reminders 🔹 Pay attention to your workplace ergonomics 🔹 Take regular breaks and avoid prolonged static positions 🔹 Maintain proper posture while working and using mobile devices 🔹 If symptoms persist, consult a healthcare professional and follow their medical advice One lesson has become very clear to me: We invest heavily in our careers, but our health deserves the same level of attention. If sharing this experience helps even one person recognize a problem early, improve their posture, or seek timely medical advice, then writing this post will have been worthwhile.
