Sometimes, the Biggest Growth Driver Isn't Consumer Choice. It's regulation. That might sound strange. After all, no one buys a car because a safety standard was updated. Or a smart meter because the government mandated it. Or an energy-efficient appliance because regulations changed. But manufacturers have no choice. An EMS company doesn't sell products to consumers. It manufactures them for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Once the finished product is delivered, the OEM takes responsibility for branding, marketing and selling it to the end customer. So when regulations change, it's the OEM that must redesign its products—and the EMS partner that manufactures the upgraded version. Every new regulation raises the minimum standard a product must meet. A vehicle may need additional sensors. An appliance may require more advanced control systems. A factory may need smarter automation equipment. A power grid may replace conventional meters with smart meters. Sometimes, a single regulatory change can make an existing technology obsolete almost overnight and accelerate the adoption of a newer one. The product may look almost the same. But what's inside it changes. More sensors. More electronic components. Greater manufacturing complexity. Unlike metrics such as localisation, electronics content or premiumisation, the impact of regulation isn't something you can easily measure with a single KPI. Instead, it often acts as a structural shift—raising the technological baseline for an entire industry and permanently changing what manufacturers are required to build. It's not the first thing investors think about when analysing an EMS company. But over time, regulations don't just improve products. They redefine them.
