Join us!! I’ve had the opportunity to participate in several IDB Programs and they are all excellent. Folks in Industry are welcome to attend as well. These are the goals you’ll accomplish: 1. Enterprise Lifecycle Integration - Participants should gain a better understanding of how decisions made in one phase of the lifecycle may create operational, sustainment, affordability, and readiness consequences across the entire enterprise. 2. Applied Problem Framing and Executive Reflection - Participants will spend time diagnosing complexity, surfacing assumptions, and challenging their own thinking before attempting to generate solutions. 3. Realistic Tradeoff Decision-Making - Participants will make and discuss explicit choices between competing priorities such as speed, readiness, modernization, affordability, resilience, and sustainment. 4. Cross-Functional Collaboration Under Tension - IDB staff will deliberately place participants from different organizations and disciplines into unresolved (notional) problems that require negotiation, influence, and enterprise alignment rather than functional optimization. 5. Government-Industry Integration Under Constraint - Participants will explore how effective lifecycle outcomes depend on the alignment of incentives, information-sharing, and decision authority between government program offices and industry partners, and practice navigating those boundaries in a realistic, but notional, enterprise scenario.
As we know, the Defense Acquisition System is being asked to move faster, accept more risk, and make increasingly complex decisions. Those realities are not going anywhere soon, and delivering capability quickly is only part of the challenge. Long-term readiness, sustainment, affordability, and operational effectiveness are still critical. The Life Cycle Executive Leadership Program (LCELP), designed, developed, and offered by the Institute for Defense and Business (IDB), helps leaders navigate those competing demands. Through realistic, hands-on lessons and exercises, participants work alongside academic faculty, senior practitioners, and leaders from across government, military, and private industry to tackle the same types of challenges they face in the real world. The discussions in the program are not about finding easy answers. They are about understanding the perspectives, tradeoffs, and ultimately the consequences that drive sound decisions across the acquisition and sustainment enterprise. The Result: A broader understanding of how decisions made today will affect readiness, affordability, and mission success tomorrow. 📍In Person: July 27–31 | Chapel Hill-Durham-Raleigh 💻Virtual: August 24–28 If you and your team are responsible for balancing speed, cost, readiness, and long-term sustainment, the IDB LCELP provides the perspective and tools needed to make better, more informed decisions. Johnstown has survived floods, steel mill closures, and economic collapse. It didn't disappear; it adapted. And that grit got passed down. Last week, Pennsylvania took center stage at the Defense & Innovation Summit. This event brought together military commanders, defense CEOs, and industry leaders to talk about the future of American manufacturing and national security. The message was clear: Pennsylvania isn't just part of America's defense industrial base. Rather, it’s always been its backbone. But the conversation I keep coming back to is our latest podcast with William C. Polacek of JWF Industries, a company born in a two-car garage in Johnstown that now serves defense, energy, and data center markets. Bill didn't build it on technology or timing. He built it on people, culture and community. That's the through line from the steelworkers to today. The opportunity only matters if you've built the people to carry it. Curiosity has been the best investment I’ve ever made. A sentence from The Almanack of Naval Ravikant caught my attention: “Follow your intellectual curiosity more than whatever is ‘hot’ right now.” Looking back, every meaningful step in my career began with curiosity. It led me beyond procurement into contracts, governance, arbitration, supply chain, and leadership. More importantly, it eventually led me to mentor others. At some point, learning stopped being about earning another qualification. It became about making better decisions, asking better questions, and helping others grow. Titles may open doors. Curiosity determines how far you walk through them. #leadership #learning #curiosity #mentoring #procurement #supplychain #governance #contracts #commercial #growth

Great piece by Levi Heilman and our very own Brian H. on the ugly (but very real) financial cost of reactive maintenance -- and how to avoid it 👇
What happens when two reliability experts tackle one of the biggest challenges in predictive maintenance? Brian H., former Reliability Engineer at U.S. Steel and now Principal Trainer & Consultant at Eruditio, combines 12 years of manufacturing experience with 17 years of military leadership. He joins Levi Heilman, Head of Solution Strategy at KCF Technologies, to explain why reactive predictive maintenance kills ROI and how to build a truly proactive program. Veteran leadership often translates directly into civilian operational excellence—especially in mission-critical environments. Brenden Blair, CEO and Owner of St. George Equipment LLC (Jacksonville, FL), is a service-disabled veteran entrepreneur applying Air Force standards of discipline, accountability, and urgency to support mission-critical DC power systems, industrial batteries, chargers, and BESS solutions for clients who depend on reliable performance. In his upcoming Buzz on Veterans appearance, Brenden discusses key lessons for veteran entrepreneurs and business leaders: continuing the mission after service, building from hands-on expertise, defining success by impact, and carrying military-grade standards into civilian operations. Brenden Blair appears Wednesday, July 22, 2026 at Veterans United Brewery in Jacksonville, FL with host Chris Budihas and co-host Ron Gamble.
