The mission of the Rail Safety Division (RSD) is to diligently strive to inspire safe and reliable rail transportation in California by promoting and enforcing railroad, rail crossing and rail transit safety; and by improving or establishing a positive rail safety culture therein, through our inspection and enforcement efforts and our resolve to look beyond the regulations. RSD strives to enforce state and federal laws, regulations, orders, and directives relating proactively and effectively to transportation of persons or commodities by rail. RSD is comprised of the Railroad Operations Safety Branch (ROSB), Rail Crossings and Engineering Branch (RCEB), and Rail Transit Safety Branch (RTSB).

Job Description And Duties
Under supervision of a Rail Safety Inspector- Supervisor (Superintendent) and a Rail Safety Inspector- Senior, a Rail Safety Inspector- Track, works on various field projects regarding railroad track infrastructure. Tasks include field surveys, surveillance, investigations, routine and focused inspections of railroads, research and risk analysis to evaluate railroad safety culture, safety policies and existing regulatory compliance governing railroad track maintenance, and other work as required. The incumbent has an assigned inspection territory and works predominantly in the field; therefore, for economical time management, the incumbent has a home office in or near his/her territory. He/she will be available for other statewide assignments and/or tasks, as deemed necessary.
This position is for the Central Region section of ROSB, which will be home-based. The incumbent will report to the local CPUC headquarters office, as needed.
Special Requirements
A valid California Driver's License, is required.
