Position Overview
Amatriot is seeking a mid-level Computer Engineer to support the Office of Naval Research (ONR) within the Department of Defense. This position will support a program focused on systems engineering, rapid prototyping, and the integration of advanced capabilities in support of the nation’s warfighters.
The Computer Engineer will conduct research, develop engineering solutions, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to design, integrate, test, and deliver prototype systems. This role requires hands-on experience with embedded software, firmware, microcontrollers, robotics platforms, hardware/software integration, technical documentation, and prototype testing.
The ideal candidate is a technically skilled engineer who can work across software, hardware, and systems engineering disciplines; contribute to fast-paced prototyping efforts; support live test events; and communicate technical status clearly to government and internal stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and test firmware and embedded C software for microcontrollers and single-board computers.
Develop software for microcontroller architectures such as RP2040 and similar embedded platforms.
Implement communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, and Ethernet to interface reliably with sensors and custom hardware.
Develop and integrate software for autonomy, control algorithms, robotics systems, and edge computing platforms.
Use robotics frameworks such as Robot Operating System (ROS) to integrate custom software with commercial off-the-shelf and government off-the-shelf hardware.
Support rapid prototyping efforts by integrating software, firmware, sensors, electronics, and mechanical components into functional prototype systems.
Perform hands-on benchtop debugging, code flashing, troubleshooting, and software-to-hardware integration.
Work closely with electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, systems engineers, and other technical team members to develop and test prototype capabilities.
Assist with the preparation and delivery of Level 2 Technical Data Packages for assigned projects that reach prototype or low-rate production stages.
Develop and maintain technical briefs for prototype devices and related engineering efforts.
Prepare and deliver installation plans, drawings, and supporting technical documentation.
Prepare and support test plans for functional, performance, and environmental testing of prototype systems.
Validate hardware integration performance using approved industry standards, site-specific construction codes, policies, and customer requirements.
Travel to CONUS locations to support live test events, demonstrations, and operational evaluations.
Provide on-site technical support, real-time troubleshooting, data collection, and test support for prototype systems under evaluation.
Coordinate prototype and low-rate production activities with external parties responsible for producing or installing units for assigned projects.
Provide routine project status updates to management, government stakeholders, and other team members.
Communicate urgent production, integration, or testing issues in a timely manner using normal communication methods, including phone and email.
Purchase materials on behalf of the government, as needed, to support prototype and low-rate production activities for assigned projects.
Support multiple concurrent engineering projects while maintaining quality, schedule, and documentation requirements.
QualificationsEducation
ABET-accredited Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
Experience
Minimum of 3 years of experience in a role requiring engineering expertise.
Experience with embedded systems, firmware development, robotics, or hardware/software integration.
Experience with microcontrollers and single-board computers.
Experience supporting prototype development, integration, and testing.
Experience preparing or contributing to Technical Data Packages.
Experience working on multidisciplinary engineering teams.
