Working on state-funded DCAMM construction in Massachusetts tells you a contractor meets the baseline requirements. Experience tells you they've sat across the table from state agencies, navigated the RFP process, managed the compliance expectations, and delivered projects that kept ownership, brokers, and tenants all on the same side. For the last fourteen years Walker Development has worked alongside more than 12 Massachusetts and federal agencies and completed over 26 DCAMM projects, from the DTA and DCF to the EPA, RMV, and Social Security Administration. That depth of experience shapes how we approach every public sector project, not just the construction, but the strategy, the alignment, and the relationships around it. If you want to go deeper on what DCAMM really requires, we broke it down on the Walker Dev blog: https://lnkd.in/gvSKurZP #WalkerDevelopment #DCAMM #PublicSectorConstruction #MassachusettsConstruction #CRE #CommercialRealEstate #ConstructionManagement

Meet Kim Rizzo. As an Accounting Specialist at Walker Development, Kim works behind the scenes on every project, making sure the financial side of construction runs as smoothly as the build itself. She's been part of the Walker team for two years. Q: For people who might not think about the financial side of construction, what does your role involve day to day? A: Handling billing, contracts, A/R collections, weekly reports, expenses for employee credit cards, timecards, and last but definitely not least the AR/AP for our D9 Division. Q: Construction accounting is different from a lot of other industries. What makes it unique and what did you have to learn coming into this world? A: What makes construction accounting different is AIA invoicing and not everything is billed every month. Being able to explain to customers how the invoicing works if needed especially with retainage as well as all the different kind of waivers. Q: You work behind the scenes on every project without ever setting foot on the job site. How do you stay connected to the work and understand what's actually happening in the field? A: While I don't see the day-to-day on site, I have a great bird’s eye view. By entering the contract/PO into the system I have an idea of what is happening as well as when change orders come in. I can see who worked at a site from their timecards and expenses, and being in the office with the APM/PMs, I can ask questions if needed. Q: What has surprised you most about working in the construction industry? A: How one thing, regardless of how big or small, can cause so many delays and the impact it has on everyone. Q: What has stood out to you most about working at Walker specifically? A: The owners are truly invested in you and will do what they can to make sure you have what you need to succeed. Everyone that works here genuinely likes and wants to be here which makes coming into the office pleasant. Q: What would you say to someone considering a career in construction accounting or finance? A: Become a notary to help keep invoicing and waivers moving without delay.

3 Mistruths About Commercial Renovations A lot of assumptions go into a commercial renovation before the first conversation even happens. Here are three we hear often, and what experience shows us works best. 1. The permit is the delay. Permitting is often seen as the biggest hurdle, but when projects are set up thoughtfully, it becomes a smooth and predictable step. Clear documentation, complete submissions, and aligned design decisions help keep things moving forward. With strong pre-construction planning, permitting supports progress rather than slowing it. 2. The lowest bid is the best value. A lower number on paper rarely stays that way. True project value comes from clarity, completeness, and reliable partners. Well-defined scopes, transparent pricing, and experienced subcontractors create consistency from start to finish. The strongest proposals focus on delivering lasting value—not just the lowest initial cost. 3. Construction is where everything is decided. Most people focus on what happens during the build. The reality is that the decisions made before a single wall comes down determine most of the outcome. Scope clarity, aligned budgets, trusted contractor relationships, and early coordination all contribute to a smoother, more predictable experience. The best commercial renovations aren't determined during construction. They're achieved in the planning. Any misconceptions you've run into working on commercial projects? Drop it in the comments. #CommercialRealEstate #ConstructionManagement #CRE #WalkerDevelopment #CommercialRenovation #RealEstateDevelopment

Summer on a construction site hits different. The days are longer, the projects are busier, and the heat is real. How our team manages says a lot about how they operate. At Walker, summer scheduling starts with one priority: take care of the people doing the work. That means early morning start times, so the hardest physical work happens before the heat of the day peaks. It means shifting indoor finish work to the afternoon, keeping crews productive in climate-controlled spaces when temperatures climb. And it means making sure every site has what it needs to stay safe and moving. The operational adjustments matter too. Materials like adhesives, sealants, and finishes don't perform well in extreme heat, so storage and sequencing get planned carefully. Interior finishes have strict humidity requirements, so temporary climate control comes in before the finish work begins, not after something goes wrong. Summer is also when subcontractor schedules fill up fast and utility companies fall behind. We plan further ahead this time of year because the margin for last-minute coordination shrinks. Long days. Active sites. A lot of moving parts. We wouldn't have it any other way. Here's to the crews making it happen this summer. #WalkerDevelopment #SummerConstruction #JobSiteLife #PeopleFirst #ConstructionManagement #WalkerWay #NewEnglandConstruction

Project Spotlight: Rag & Bone | Wrentham, MA When a premium fashion brand comes to Wrentham Village Outlets, the space has to match the product. The project transformed an existing retail space into an open-concept environment that reflects the quality and character of a high-end clothing brand. The scope was comprehensive: make-safe mechanical, electrical, and fire alarm systems, full removal of existing fixtures and flooring, new dressing room layout, soffits, finishes, and updated electrical throughout the sales floor. Below the slab, we excavated for new electrical and data conduits and poured a newly doweled concrete slab finished with a polished grind-and-epoxy. The kind of detail that lives underfoot but defines the entire feel of the space. Owner-provided millwork, sales fixtures, counters, accessories, and branded signage were installed with the precision this brand demands. Every element was coordinated to align with the retailer's vision from the sales floor to the back of house. Walker Development delivered a refined, edgy retail environment built to elevate both the brand and the customer experience. There's a lot that goes into getting a luxury retail space right. We dive deeper on our blog if you want to see how it all came together: https://lnkd.in/gEUzh3Ri. #RetailConstruction #LuxuryRetail #WrenthamOutlets #CommercialBuildOut #WalkerDevelopment #RetailDesign

Every project is unique. But one thing consistently creates better outcomes for everyone involved: familiarity. When we work with a client across multiple projects, something shifts. The relationship moves beyond scope and schedules. There's a deeper understanding of how each other works, what success looks like, and how to get there together. Communication becomes more streamlined. Challenges are addressed faster. And over time, that foundation of trust creates space for something even more valuable—creativity. When relationships are established, conversations become more collaborative. We stop simply reacting to project requirements and start proactively identifying opportunities to improve, enhance, and think ahead. Familiarity with a physical space matters too. Whether it's a country club, university campus, or corporate office, every property has its own nuances. When our team has been there before, we anticipate challenges, plan more effectively, and reduce surprises from the start. Some of our most rewarding work has come from clients we've had the privilege of building with more than once. Those relationships remind us that the value of a project isn't just what gets built, it's the partnership that continues long after the work is complete. We went deeper on this one over on the Walker blog, worth a read if this resonated with you: https://lnkd.in/gAmd7VWe #WalkerDevelopment #CommercialConstruction #ClientPartnership #ConstructionManagement #BuildingRelationships
