A new school year means a new Desk Side Chat from VBCPS Superintendent Dr. Donald Robertson. In this month's edition, Dr. Robertson shares four priorities for the 2026-27 school year: purposeful use of educational technology, increased academic expectations, safe and welcoming learning environments and strong parent partnerships. A few highlights worth knowing: more than 60% of the Class of 2026 graduated with honors, more than 20% earned a cumulative GPA above 4.0, and more than 90% of staff, students and parents reported their school is safe. VBCPS is also welcoming more than 63,000 students back to 85 school sites, supported by thousands of dedicated professionals. At our 2026 VBCPS Summer Graduation, one graduate shared her story. She left school in 2024 and was turned away by programs she hoped would give her another chance. Then Landstown High School did. They believed in her. They supported her. They never gave up on her. Standing at the podium as a graduate, she had a message for anyone who feels like they have fallen behind: "Please don't give up on yourself. I did it. We did it." This is why we do this work. 🔗 Learn more about VBCPS: https://lnkd.in/e_HZgS3Z #WeAreVBSchools #ChartingTheCourseAtVBCPS #VirginiaBeach #HamptonRoads

This year, over 400 new educators joined Virginia Beach City Public Schools for the 2026 New Educator Orientation, and the energy in the room said everything. From first-year teachers stepping into a classroom for the very first time to experienced educators returning to their passion for teaching, every person who walked through the door arrived with purpose. Over three days, new staff connected with colleagues from their home schools, dove into curriculum, and built the relationships that, as one leader put it, will carry them for the rest of their careers. At VBCPS, orientation is the beginning of something lasting. 🔗 Learn more about VBCPS: https://lnkd.in/eduAB-MB #WeAreVBSchools #ChartingTheCourseAtVBCPS #VirginiaBeach #HamptonRoads

VBCPS teachers and Department of Teaching and Learning staff came together for the fourth annual DTLCon to share best practices, explore new initiatives and invest in each other's growth. From pre-K through high school, sessions covered gifted education, computer science and everything in between. Teachers heard from colleagues and experts, expanded their professional networks and walked away inspired and ready for the school year ahead. That kind of commitment to learning does not happen by accident. It is a reflection of who our educators are. 🔗 Learn more about VBCPS: https://lnkd.in/eduAB-MB #WeAreVBSchools #ChartingTheCourseAtVBCPS

What does it look like when educators invest in their own growth so students can reach theirs? VBCPS teachers and administrators recently participated in AVID's PATH Premium professional learning, a three-day experience designed to equip educators with the tools they need to successfully implement AVID's college and career readiness system in their schools. For one AVID leader, the biggest takeaway was simple: building genuine connections with students and seeing them flourish. That impact was on full display when former student Aliyah Pitts spoke at the conference, a moment her teacher described as both emotional and fulfilling. As Pitts put it, the AVID classroom is about building the skill set to be college ready and future ready. And for the educators who show up every day to make that happen, knowing they were part of that journey is everything. #WeAreVBSchools #ChartingTheCourseAtVBCPS
