I recently had a great conversation with my good friends Ken Pilot and Melissa Gonzalez on The Retail Pilot - Leaders & Legends about Urban Outfitters and the work we’ve been doing over the past few years. We covered a lot - from the momentum behind our owned labels BDG Jeans and Out From Under to how we’re showing up in culture, the evolution of our stores, and what we like to call “big mall energy.” For us, it always comes back to our customer: listening to them, learning from them, and staying curious about what inspires them. Urban Outfitters is betting that back-to-campus is about more than what students wear. Everyone assumes Gen Z walked away from the mall. They grew up on their phones. They buy everything online. Stores are nostalgia to them. Not quite. Shea Jensen, President North America at Urban Outfitters, sees the opposite in her traffic data. Stores are full. She has a name for it: big mall energy. And the reason cuts against everything you'd guess... This is the generation that came of age in a pandemic. Isolation was the default setting. Their first real trip away from home was college. So gathering, going to a movie, meeting people at the mall, isn't a throwback to them. It's a novelty. The thing you assume they've outgrown is the thing they never got to have. Don't sell Gen Z the convenience they already own. Sell them the room. At Urban Outfitters, community is at the heart of everything we do. This summer, our Home Office teams spent nearly 100 hours volunteering alongside our longtime partner Philabundance, supporting its Summer Lunchbox program at the Philabundance Community Kitchen. Over three shifts, UO employees and leaders rolled up their sleeves to prep ingredients and pack lunches — helping provide free, healthy meals to children across Philadelphia facing hunger when school is out. That commitment extends beyond our volunteer hours. UO donated $25,000 to Philabundance, and from July 1 through August 31, 100% of cashwrap round-up donations at Urban Outfitters stores across North America will go directly to the organization in support of its work to fight hunger. We’re grateful to every employee who used their Volunteer Paid Time Off to give back this summer, to our customers who have rounded up in stores, and to Philabundance for the vital work they do every day across our community.

Urban Outfitters has put 76 students at the centre of its back-to-campus campaign, filmed at Rutgers University and built around student perspectives. The campaign gives the retailer a more direct connection to the campus customer at one of the most competitive moments in the youth retail calendar. Back-to-campus marketing has shifted from simply showing trends to proving cultural proximity. By casting real students and filming on campus, Urban Outfitters is betting that authenticity can protect relevance as Gen Z consumers become more selective about which brands earn their attention. Back-to-Campus is one of our biggest moments of the year Urban Outfitters and one we’ve been building around for years. This year alone, from Decision Day to graduation and move-in, we’ve continued to show up for students in the moments that matter. All Together Now is the latest expression of that commitment, bringing together 76 real students from more than 10 universities for our first Back-to-Campus commercial.
