UN Peacekeeping helps countries torn by conflict create conditions for lasting peace.

About us

Peacekeeping has proven to be one of the most effective tools available to the UN to assist host countries navigate the difficult path from conflict to peace. Peacekeeping has unique strengths, including legitimacy, burden sharing, and an ability to deploy and sustain troops and police from around the globe, integrating them with civilian peacekeepers to advance multidimensional mandates. UN peacekeepers provide security and the political and peacebuilding support to help countries make the difficult, early transition from conflict to peace.

  • As conflicts globally intensify, conflict-related sexual violence continues to devastate lives and communities. Covering January to December 2025, the United Nations Secretary-General's 17th annual report on conflict-related sexual violence highlights a sharp rise in verified cases and reveals how conflict-related sexual violence continues to be used as a tactic of war, torture, terrorism and political repression. Women and girls remain disproportionately affected, while men, boys and LGBTQI+ persons also face heightened risks, particularly in detention settings. Escalating conflicts, restricted humanitarian access, record levels of displacement, attacks on humanitarian workers and shrinking funding to gender-based violence assistance have weakened prevention and response efforts. As a result, many survivors lack access to protection, healthcare, justice and essential services. The report also highlights the growing misuse of digital technologies to intimidate, exploit and further traumatize survivors. While outlining progress in strengthening accountability through national prosecutions, judicial reforms, cooperation with Member States, targeted sanctions and survivor-centred initiatives, the report calls for sustained investment in prevention and in services for survivors, monitoring and protection mechanisms, including the deployment of Women's Protection Advisers where mandated. Across peace operations, UN Peacekeeping helps prevent and respond to conflict-related sexual violence by: 🔹 Protecting civilians under threat; 🔹 Monitoring and reporting conflict-related sexual violence; 🔹 Supporting national authorities to strengthen accountability; 🔹 Deploying Women's Protection Advisers and gender expertise, where mandated; 🔹 Working with communities to promote prevention and survivor-centred responses, collaboration with national authorities, UN partners and communities. Preventing conflict-related sexual violence is essential to protecting civilians, advancing sustainable peace, and ensuring survivors receive the protection, support and justice they deserve. 📖 Read the report: https://lnkd.in/gk57bekF #EndRapeInWar #WomenPeaceSecurity UN Action

  • #InvestInPeace means to invest in #YouthPeaceSecurity. In mid-June, young leaders from communities across Kosovo (UNSCR 1244) and the wider Western Balkans gathered for the 8th United Nations Youth Assembly, supported by the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (#UNMIK) as part of broader UN efforts to advance the #YouthPeaceSecurity agenda. Held under the theme "Youth in the Field," the Assembly brought together participants to discuss issues affecting young people, including rural-urban disparities, participation in governance, economic opportunities, inclusion, mental health, and the role of youth leaders in their communities. Opening the Assembly, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Peter Due, underscored the importance of youth participation in shaping their societies stating that: “Young people are not merely beneficiaries of policies and programmes; they are partners, innovators, peacebuilders, entrepreneurs and agents of change.” At the conclusion of the Assembly, five youth-led, cross-community initiatives were selected to receive UNMIK support in the form of small grants, helping turn ideas into action.

  • What happens when there is "a peace to keep" but it is not enough? Our latest Lessons Learned report examines a decade of #MINUSMA's support to peace processes in #Mali, the challenges it encountered and what future United Nations peacekeeping operations can take forward to further improve their effectiveness. Drawing on interviews, operational experience and institutional learning, the report offers practical lessons to help shape the future of peacekeeping operations as they face increasingly complex political and security environments as well as budgetary restrictions. The report will also allow the international community to learn from one of the UN's most complex peace operations where over 300 peacekeepers lost their lives in the service of peace. The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali, MINUSMA, was Established in 2013 by the UN Security Council to stabilize the situation in northern Mali following a 2012 coup and jihadist uprising. The mission was mandated to support the political transition, protect civilians, and promote human rights amidst ongoing conflict and instability. MINUSMA’s role evolved over its ten-year tenure to address the changing political and security landscape, leading to its withdrawal at the request of the Malian government in 2023. • For 30 years, the United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) has been powering United Nations operations around the world. From rapidly deploying critical equipment to delivering innovative technology, geospatial services, logistics and digital solutions, UNGSC helps enable the implementation of United Nations mandates in some of the world's most complex environments. As an enabler of the United Nations Digital Transformation Strategy, UNGSC is leveraging smart technologies capabilities to strengthen operational efficiency, situational awareness and service delivery. One example is the integration of Field Remote Infrastructure Monitoring (FRIM) into camp management. By monitoring critical infrastructure, utilities, security systems and assets, FRIM supports more informed decision-making, optimizes resource management and strengthens safety and security. Since 2021, these technologies have been progressively deployed, beginning with a pilot at the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (#UNISFA). Through the continued adoption of smart technologies, UNGSC is helping deliver more integrated, efficient and resilient support to the United Nations and its partners worldwide. If there is anything further we can provide, or if you would find it helpful to discuss any aspect of the text, please don't hesitate to reach out. We would be very happy to support in any way we can.

  • Strengthening a coordinated United Nations response to sexual violence in conflict. Established in 2007, UN Action brings together peacekeepers, human rights experts, humanitarian aid providers, and other actors across the UN system to address sexual violence in conflict as a serious peace and security issue. In June, UN Action held its strategic retreat at UN Women in New York, with virtual participation from Geneva and Nairobi. UN Action brought together its member entities to strengthen collaboration across the system and identify priorities for the years ahead. The network exchanged updates on advocacy for action, knowledge-building, and strategic country-level support, as well as enhancing overall UN system-wide coordination. #EndRapeInWar / #SGBV / #WomenPeaceSecurity Present at the retreat were: United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), UN Women, United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), UNICEF, UNDP, United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, IOM - UN Migration, OSRSG CAAC, UNEP-WCMC, United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), UN Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA), DPO, OSAPG, UN Office of the Special Representative to the Secretary General - Sexual Violence in Conflict, ITC.

📸 Igor Rugwiza & Leonel Grothe

  • Peacekeeper Profile: Meet Zhou Yue, a Chinese🇨🇳 police officer serving with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in #Cyprus, UNFICYP. "I have always believed that policing is not only about enforcement, but also about service and responsibility beyond borders," Officer Yue explains. Inspired by the professionalism, dedication, and impact of Chinese women peacekeepers before her, Officer Yue felt deeply moved to serve for peace. As a United Nations Police (UNPOL) Team Leader in #UNFICYP, Officer Yue maintains law and order within the buffer zone, monitors the crossing points between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides, and prevents and reports all forms of illegal activities in the buffer zone. She also liaises and coordinates closely with both sides’ police authorities. Her work contributes to building trust between the two sides, preventing conflicts from escalating and creating space for long-term political solutions. "Supporting peacekeeping means supporting peace itself. Every effort made on the ground contributes to a safer and more stable future for all." This week, the UN is hosting the fifth UN Chiefs of Police Summit. From 7 to 8 July, #UNCOPS brings together ministers, chiefs of police, and senior representatives of regional and professional policing organizations to UN Headquarters in New York. #InvestInPeace #PKDay #WomenPeaceSecurity
