  • Detecting mis/disinformation and hate speech in real time? That is exactly what the Unite Wave and MAIE (Monitoring and Analysis of the Information Environment) platforms do. On the International Day for Countering Hate Speech (18 June), DOS is proud to highlight the Unite Wave and MAIE platforms. These powerful AI-enabled tools are developed by the United Nations Office of Information and Communications Technology and the Department of Peace Operations. These tools are transforming how peacekeeping missions understand the information landscape. 🔹They detect mis/disinformation and hate speech in real time 🔹They work across public FM radio and online channels 🔹And they operate in more than 100 languages Recognized with a 2025 United Nations Secretary-General Award, Unite Wave and MAIE are reshaping how peacekeeping missions track and respond to harmful narratives using public resources. We extend our sincere thanks to our generous donors – Mission permanente de la France auprès des Nations unies, Germany in the UN | German Federal Ministry of Defence | Bundesministerium der Verteidigung, Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United Nations, Permanent Mission of Canada to the UN | Mission permanente du Canada auprès de l’ONU and the Republic of Korea – whose support made this possible. • The Department of Operational Support, through its Office of Supply Chain Management (Department of Operational Support), has successfully concluded the Aeromedical Evacuation Working Group, delivering key recommendations to strengthen aeromedical evacuation capabilities across United Nations operations. The working group brought together 47 experts from 24 Member States, combining medical, logistical and operational expertise to address the challenges of delivering high-quality care in complex environments. A central outcome is the introduction of a standardized and scalable model for Aeromedical Evacuation Teams. A three-person team, comprising a specialist doctor, critical care nurse and paramedic, has been recommended as the minimum standard, with flexibility to expand based on mission needs. The recommendations also highlight the importance of modular, lightweight equipment and the integration of innovative technologies to enhance care during evacuation. In parallel, a strong emphasis is placed on standardized training, continuous learning and interoperability across missions to strengthen operational readiness and improve patient outcomes. These deliverables will inform the development of a standardized baseline of requirements both UN-owned and commercially deployed aeromedical evacuation capabilities. A phased rollout, including field testing and further refinement, is planned to support adoption across the UN system. This initiative marks an important step in harmonizing practices, strengthening operational preparedness and ensuring consistent, high-quality medical support for UN personnel worldwide. The work of the Aeromedical Evacuation Working Group falls within a wider project to develop life-saving medical modules, which is funded by the United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (https://lnkd.in/et8feJE3).

  • Every year on 14 June, World Blood Donor Day reminds us of a simple truth: blood saves lives, and it cannot be manufactured. Blood and blood products are essential for emergency care, maternal health, surgery, cancer treatment, and the management of chronic conditions. Behind every transfusion stands a voluntary donor who chose to act. The DOS Division of Health-Care and Occupational Health and Safety (DHMOSH) supports the health of United Nations staff across more than 100 locations worldwide, including field duty stations where safe blood availability can be the difference between life and loss. Encouraging blood donation does not always require formal campaigns. Raising awareness, sharing accurate information, and leading by example can already make a difference. Those who are eligible and able may consider donating blood through accredited local services. A single donation can save more than one life. Give blood. Give hope. World Health Organization

In an era of rising tensions, peacekeeping is a proven and cost-effective way to restore stability and hope. But it requires steady political backing and reliable financial support. #InvestInPeace calls for decisive action to ensure peacekeepers have the resources to carry out their vital mandates. On the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, Secretary-General António Guterres paid tribute to nearly 4,500 peacekeepers who have lost their lives since 1948, including 59 last year. • Operating in remote and fragile contexts shaped by conflict, climate pressures and competition over natural resources, United Nations peace operations have a responsibility not only to minimize environmental impacts, but also to maximize benefits for host communities wherever possible. This #WorldEnvironmentDay (5 June), we’re highlighting how investments in local infrastructure can meet immediate operational needs while supporting long-term community resilience. In the Central African Republic, the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) partnered with UNOPS and the Municipality of Bangui to rehabilitate Kolongo, the area’s only municipal landfill. Supported by technical assistance from DOS, the project extended the landfill’s lifespan by approximately 12 years, benefiting both the mission and local residents who depend on the site. A key component of the initiative was training local personnel in landfill operations and maintenance, helping ensure sustainable, long-term impact and a positive legacy. United Nations Peacekeeping

  • Through UNTold: Behind the Scenes of United Nations Operations, DOS documents operational innovations and lessons learned from peacekeeping and field support operations around the world. In the Central African Republic, the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (#MINUSCA) is exploring alternative approaches to peacekeeping infrastructure through the use of Hydraform hardwall construction technology. The project is helping assess how locally produced hardwall solutions may complement existing and emerging accommodations approaches in certain field environments, while examining important considerations related to sustainability, environmental impacts, structural safety, operational feasibility and long-term maintenance. When properly planned and managed throughout their full life cycle, such approaches may also contribute to a more positive operational legacy by supporting local capacity and reducing environmental impact over time. Using locally sourced materials and labour where suitable conditions exist, the initiative also contributes to skills development and local economic opportunities through hands-on training in Hydraform construction methods. Through short documentary-style productions and global discussions, #UNTold helps preserve institutional knowledge, promote practical solutions and give visibility to the personnel and systems working behind the scenes to support UN mandates. • Today is the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers. The Department of Operational Support honours the women and men for their service and sacrifice in advancing peace and protecting communities around the world.     As UN Peacekeeping faces increasingly complex challenges, DOS remains committed to supporting missions with practical and tailored solutions for effective and efficient mandate delivery. • Mount Hermon, located in the Golan region, is known for its remote location, tough landscape and severe weather. Despite these challenges, United Nations peacekeepers remain committed to constantly monitoring the area and supporting stability, even in harsh conditions. Amid the extreme cold, United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) peacekeepers from the Nepal Army perform a telemedicine simulation exercise connecting front-line responders with higher levels of care in real-time. Using the latest industry-standard portable telemedicine kits and the high-speed satellite connectivity, the team can transmit critical medical data and access virtual remote medical support. As one of the flagship initiatives of the Department of Operational Support (DOS), the Triangular Partnership Programme’s Telemedicine Project, jointly managed with the Division of Healthcare Management and Occupational Safety and Health (DHMOSH) and the United Nations Office of Information and Communications Technology, has become an essential tool in UNDOF for addressing the urgent medical needs faced by UN peacekeepers during their daily work. It supports data-driven decisions and helps maintain continuity of care when there are limited medical resources available on site. Made possible by generous funding from the United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (https://lnkd.in/gznEQBXi), telemedicine technology now supports UN peacekeepers in MINURSO, UNDOF, UNISFA, UNSMIL and UNSOS, playing a vital role in safeguarding their health and operational readiness, even in the most austere and demanding environments.
