Designing units that build transferable conceptual understanding is one challenge. Assessing for that understanding is another. Our first Deep Dive into the Enhanced MYP brings both sides together. Carla Marschall explores how to choose concepts that anchor a unit and write understandings that extend beyond it. Angela Stancar Johnson looks at designing assessments that reveal transfer. 22 August | 10 AM GMT | Free and virtual Register here - https://hubs.li/Q04sK4rX0

This is a first for me. My first time working with Toddle - Your Teaching Partner. And my first time keynoting at an AI event. However, I will not be speaking directly about AI; there are so many people so much more capable and qualified for that than me. Instead, I will be talking about data. Because it seems to me that we are at a data threshold: either AI can be our friend as we aim ever better to know every learner; or it will consolidate our crueller and colder data habits, leaving each student unable to be seen, be heard, be known or belong. My presentation is called "Knowing Every Learner: why data in schools must be kind and warm, now and in the future" And the argument running through it is that, to help students flourish, we must learn to know them differently and better. Knowledge is not enough. Knowing is everything. Although the impact of my presentation will show differently for everyone there, I hope that attendees might be able to: - Recognise the difference between knowing about a student and knowing a student, and why that difference matters so much; - Apply a Kind Data lens to the information their school collects, asking whether it is gathered, held, and used with compassion and care; - Warm up the data they have, and seek more to warm it further, so that the knowing hidden in the in-betweens moves gently into the light; - Identify one practice – in data, assessment and reporting – they could redesign so that every learner in their school can be seen, be heard, be known, and belong. And the lineup of which I am a proud part includes Dr. Sabba Quidwai, Laura Knight, Jay McTighe, Armin Martin and Lucinda Willis. Please come along. It's free! https://hubs.li/Q04sc-BQ0

We saved these ideas from last year’s How Schools AI, and we still find ourselves coming back to them. We can’t wait to hear what stays with you this year! Join us on 12 September for How Schools AI. This year’s theme is Protecting Real Understanding in the Age of AI. Hear Jay McTighe on what evidence of understanding looks like now, Dr. Sabba Quidwai on moving beyond scattered AI tools, Laura Knight on embedding critical thinking in classrooms, and Matthew Savage on using data to understand learners more fully. You’ll also see how leading schools like UWC South East Asia, Munich International School e.V., the International Community School of Addis Ababa, acs egham, and St John's College, Cardiff are approaching AI use. Looking forward to the PYP Back to School with Toddle event on August 22nd! I’m especially excited for Kath Murdoch's session on Creating a culture of collaborative planning. Her book, The Power of Inquiry, has practically been my guide into PYP teaching and a great source of inspiration, so learning directly from her on how to bring that same inquiry mindset into collaborative planning is a fantastic way to kick off this academic year! Are any fellow PYP educators attending? I’d love to connect! #IBPYP #Toddle #InquiryBasedLearning #IBEducation
