One thing you can count on Annie Baker to do is create a story so realistic and visceral that you can't help but be drawn in. She continues this tradition in Infinite Life by introducing us to a very ordinary group of women living within the fine line between pleasure and pain. While attending the Theatre Communications Group’s National Conference, Michele and Mark connected with several dance organizations in San Juan to learn more about their work and how the people of San Juan remain resilient and creative amid significant uncertainty. Dance/USA collaborated with TCG to sponsor a Bomba Workshop at Corporación Piñones Se Integra - COPI, a community-based organization that promotes ecological and cultural preservation through education and cultural activities rooted in Afro-Puerto Rican knowledge and practice. Bomba is Puerto Rico's oldest traditional music and dance genre, created over 400 years ago by enslaved Africans on the island's coastal sugar plantations. As a cultural practice, Bomba has served as an essential tool for community, communication, and resistance against oppression. The workshop created space for conference attendees to connect with this vital dance form during their stay on the archipelago. While in San Juan, the team also connected with Mauro Ballet, founded and led by Marena Perez and Aureo Andino, which aims to promote the teaching of the fine arts, contributing to the dissemination and education of their cultural value. To foster the development of classical ballet, contemporary dance, art, music, and theater as part of their country's cultural offerings, and to promote the necessary and appropriate quality of life for their communities. “For the first time in my life, I watched a dance show that fully represented my culture and the art form I love, and I cried. As a Puerto Rican artist born on the mainland (United States), witnessing Mauro Ballet's production of The Wizard of Oz on the island filled me with a pride and awe I didn't know I was missing. I felt seen. There really is no place like home.” - Mark Travis Rivera For over 70 years, Ballets de San Juan (BSJ) has used the training of dancers, choreographers, and dance teachers as its vehicle to foster a love of dance among the Puerto Rican public. BSJ was founded in 1954 by Ana García and Gilda Navarra to develop the art of dance in Puerto Rico. #DanceUSA #PalanteTCG #PuertoRico #MauroBallet #BalletsDeSanJuan

Can theatre be more than entertainment; can it be an asset to the community around it? That's the question at the heart of this episode of The Bridge. Corinna Schulenburg sits down with Ariel Fristoe, founder of Out of Hand Theater, about a discovery that reframed her entire body of work. A researcher once handed her a theoretical article on the arts-based community engagement model — and pointed out that Ariel had already been living it out for years, entirely on her own. In this clip, Ariel unpacks the journey of learning about and advancing the model within the theatre and academic fields. 🎧 Hear the full conversation at the link: https://bit.ly/4pMCwiv
