The OpenAI Foundation is launching AI for Civil Society and Philanthropy to help nonprofits, community organizations, and other trusted partners put advanced AI to work on urgent challenges, develop practical solutions and scale what works. The first effort is a $100 million commitment with the Common Health Coalition to launch Breakthroughs to Follow-through to help care teams use AI to reach more patients with proven treatments - starting with the goal of doubling hepatitis C cure rates in Alabama, Illinois, Louisiana, and Massachusetts. Breakthroughs to Follow-through will work to identify patients who have fallen out of care, synthesize records, track progress, and focus limited staff time where it can have the greatest impact. The OpenAI Foundation is joining Intercept as a founding partner through our AI Resilience program. AI will accelerate biological discovery and improve human health. But those same advances also make it increasingly important to invest in resilience against misuse – including the possibility of engineered biological threats. Intercept has an ambitious vision to end respiratory infections. Rather than focusing on a single virus, the initiative will support broadly-applicable protective technologies – from new preventative medicines to cleaner indoor air and other non-pharmaceutical interventions – that can reduce transmission across many respiratory pathogens. These approaches will help make communities more resilient to respiratory infections, whether naturally emerging or deliberately engineered. RAISE US is a national nonprofit building America's people strategy for the AI economy -- the workforce infrastructure the country needs so workers can train, transition, and thrive. We are co-chaired by Gina Raimondo - the 40th U.S. Secretary of Commerce and 75th Governor of Rhode Island - and Eric Holcomb, the 51st Governor of Indiana. A little more about what we do: AI-Ready States: RAISE US partners with governors to reorient public workforce and education infrastructure for a shifting labor market. In practice, that means earn-and-learn apprenticeships and short-term credentials mapped to real employer demand, public funding that rewards job outcomes rather than enrollment. It also means creating incentives that give employers a reason to retrain and redeploy workers rather than lay them off, and providing modern transition supports — from wage insurance to career navigation — so changing jobs no longer means financial ruin. RAISE US is launching with initial partnerships in Arkansas, Connecticut, Maryland, and Utah — states that are out front nationally in preparing for the AI economy. This bipartisan group of states will serve as the first proving grounds for outcome-driven pilots. Additional states will join in the months ahead. Employer Coalition: The RAISE US employer coalition asks something specific of its members: to be vocal public champions for workforce transition and to co-design the pilots that build a shared understanding of what effective worker transition looks like in practice. Crucially, the companies building AI sit at the table alongside the companies adopting it — the first time the technology’s leading developers have joined an independent effort to design and fund worker transition. Education & Training: RAISE US will deploy flexible capital to scale AI-enabled, work-based training models that expand access to affordable, high-quality alternatives to traditional education. It will target the systemic gaps state and employer partners identify, back proven and emerging providers, and measure success by real outcomes: employment, earnings, and advancement. Policy Lab: RAISE US will design new strategies that both support workers through career transitions and encourage employers to retrain and redeploy them. It will test these ideas, study what works, and promote proven solutions that help workers of all backgrounds succeed. The Policy Lab turns data-driven insights into actionable recommendations to scale policy innovations from ideas to national practice. The work of the Policy Lab will not be funded by any corporate contributions. We launched today with founding state partnerships and more than two dozen of America's largest companies and philanthropies - including its leading AI developers. The overwhelming response made it clear that nonprofits across the country are eager to engage with AI in ways that strengthen their missions and better serve their communities. Today, we're announcing a new $50 million commitment to the Fund to support organizations working across three focus areas: - Community Support Services - Community Arts & Cultural Organizations - Community Journalism & Media We believe communities should have meaningful opportunities to shape how AI is adopted and used to advance local priorities. In September 2025, the OpenAI Foundation launched the $50 million People-First AI Fund to support local nonprofits in shaping how AI is used and understood in their communities. Our open call awarded $40.5M to 208 organizations across the United States. Today, we’re announcing the remaining $9.5M in grants going to organizations working across health and journalism. General purpose technologies – from fire to electricity to the internet – have all delivered extraordinary benefits for society. But not by default. We had to intentionally build institutions, infrastructure, and standards that made them safe and useful. We believe AI will require the same. Today the OpenAI Foundation is sharing our vision for AI Resilience: the ecosystem approach needed to mitigate the risks of AI, so that society can realize its benefits. We’re beginning this work in: 1. Bio-resilience, to help prevent future engineered threats; 2. Cyber-resilience, to strengthen the security of critical systems; 3. AI model safety, to advance independent evaluation; and 4. AI’s impact on young people, to help make technology a positive force for future generations. This work is already underway: we are finalizing our initial $130 million in grants and look forward to sharing these soon. AI Resilience is not a one-time project. Today, the OpenAI Foundation is announcing an initial $250M commitment to building secure and abundant economic futures in the age of AI. AI is likely to reshape the economy in profound ways, creating both challenges to navigate and opportunities to improve people’s lives. We don’t need to know how the future will unfold to help prepare for it. The program will focus on three areas: 1. Understanding the shift: investing in independent measurement and forecasting infrastructure. 2. Supporting the transition: helping workers and communities navigate near-term disruption. 3. Building economic security: supporting new approaches to organizing post-AI political economies and sharing the economic gains from AI widely. We are looking for ambitious work, including ideas we have not thought of yet and work we can help scale, and welcome input on what is most needed.
