This past week, we traded suit coats for lab coats. We were honored to welcome legislative staff from our Texas congressional delegation to the Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children’s, where they became “Researchers for a Day” and got a behind-the-scenes look at the groundbreaking science happening here. From examining brain tissue under the microscope to learning why our scientists love fruit flies, our guests experienced firsthand how discovery happens. They also met Duncan NRI Founder and Director Dr. Huda Zoghbi and our research teams, exploring how scientists are uncovering the causes of neurological disorders and turning those discoveries into new possibilities for patients and families. A big thank you to our congressional staff guests for spending the day with us and for embracing the science, the curiosity and yes, the fruit flies! We’re grateful for the opportunity to share how research is helping advance new possibilities for children and families in Texas and around the world.

A milestone measured not just in numbers, but in lives changed. Texas Children's recently recognized Dr. John Goss, Medical Director of Transplant Services, after he performed the 3,000th liver transplant of his career. This achievement represents thousands of patients and families, and countless moments made possible: more birthdays, more milestones, more memories, and more tomorrows. During a celebration with colleagues, former patients, friends, and family, Dr. Goss reflected on the many people who make each transplant possible, including donor families, patients, and the dedicated teams who support them throughout their journeys. For nearly three decades, Dr. Goss has been committed to advancing care and helping create new possibilities for children and families. Today, we celebrate a milestone that represents something much greater: hope, healing, and the lasting impact of compassionate care.

Today, millions of people around the world are hearing the remarkable story of Theo and Maisie—and the groundbreaking fetal surgery performed at Texas Children's—on the BBC. Before Theo was born, he was diagnosed with complex gastroschisis, a life-threatening condition in which a baby's intestines develop outside the body. Determined to give him the best possible chance, Maisie traveled to the U.S. to participate in an investigational clinical trial at Texas Children's led by fetal surgeons Dr. Sundeep Keswani and Dr. Michael Belfort. Months later, Theo was born full-term and healthy, leaving the hospital just days after birth. Theo's story reflects a breakthrough in fetal surgery and the work of a multidisciplinary team committed to solving the unsolvable. Their pioneering efforts not only advance gastroschisis treatment, but also redefine what is possible before birth. Theo's positive outcome—and his family's extraordinary courage—offer hope to others facing one of the most challenging prenatal diagnoses. Celebrating inclusion today. Inspiring discoveries for tomorrow. 💙 For the second year in a row, Duncan Neurological Research Institute faculty, staff, and family members joined Duncan NRI founder Dr. Huda Zoghbi at Rice Stadium to cheer on the final match of the Genuine Cup—a global celebration of neurodiverse athletes and the power of inclusion. For 15 years, researchers at the Duncan NRI have worked to better understand the genetic and neurological conditions that impact children and families. Moments like the Genuine Cup are a powerful reminder of why that work matters: every discovery has the potential to create a future where individuals of all abilities have the opportunity to be seen, supported, and empowered to thrive. We’re honored to stand alongside the athletes, families, and advocates whose passion, perseverance, and joy inspire our research and strengthen our commitment to a more inclusive future.
