This summer, we welcomed 24 interns across San Francisco, Kyiv, and Berlin, working in engineering, design, marketing, legal, strategy, and operations. I got to spend some time with them during a recent Q&A, and I was so impressed by their sharp, thoughtful questions. One of them asked what I wish more people did early in their careers, and my answer was to explore in creative ways. This is a time to try unexpected things. While people do switch careers, the choices they make early on tend to stick. So use the window while you have it. 1/ Get curious about the actual diversity of jobs out there. It's much broader than most people realize, and it doesn't map neatly onto college majors. 2/ Don't wait for a formal internship to explore. Between family and alums from your school, you already have a network. Reach out to an alum or ask a family member what they actually do all day. It's amazing how rarely people do this. 3/ Sit next to the work before you commit to it. Before my sophomore year, I couldn't decide between an offer at Microsoft and one at Lehman Brothers, so an alum let me spend a day at his trading desk in New York. That one day told me more than any pro-con list could. The intern experience is also personal for me right now. One of my daughters is interning this summer, so I'm hearing stories from the other side at the dinner table. It's a good reminder of how much this season shapes what comes next. I'm so proud of what this group has accomplished so far — things they've built are already in our products and benefiting our customers — and I look forward to seeing what they accomplish next. 💜
