Special Olympics Iowa brings out the champion in everyone!

About us

The mission of Special Olympics Iowa is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities giving them continued opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Throughout the year, Special Olympics athletes are training and competing in any of the 23 Olympic-type sports offered. Fall sports include bowling, flag football and volleyball and Winter sports are ice skating, Nordic and alpine skiing, snowshoeing, basketball, power lifting, gymnastics, and cheerleading. During the spring the sports include aquatics, athletics (track and field), cycling, tennis, bocce, roller skating and soccer. Summer sports include equestrian, golf and softball. These programs are provided free of charge to all participants. Through Special Olympics, the athletes develop physical fitness; gain confidence in their own abilities and demonstrate courage through their perseverance to succeed. As athletes gain new skills on the playing field and they become more active and involved in sports, their health and fitness continues to benefit. The impact of Special Olympics extends beyond sports. It gives family members hope, optimism, stronger family connections, and a social network who understand their concerns and their joys.

If someone comes to mind (or it's you!), we'd love to hear about them! Send us a message or email Megan (mfilipi@soiowa.org). While you're at the Fair, be sure to stay for Bacon Buddies this Saturday evening, August 15th! In partnership with the Iowa Pork Producers Association, 16 SOIA athletes will be showing pigs in the ring alongside 4-H and FFA youth mentors. The show starts at 6:30pm in the swine barn!

  • Sammons Financial Group Companies has been a longtime supporter of Special Olympics Iowa and a statewide partner since 2010. In addition to Champion Statewide Partner status, Sammons Financial Group is also the primary sponsor of the Summer Games bocce competition, annual State Softball Tournament held his past weekend, and Young Athletes Play Days in the West Central area. Financial support is only the tip of the iceberg for their support, however. Sammons employees care deeply about every one of the athletes in Special Olympics and you can see it in their volunteerism at events, coaching teams, serving on the SOIA Board of Directors, and promotion of inclusion around their offices. Thank you Sammons Financial Group for your extremely generous contribution of $75,000 to Special Olympics Iowa, and your unwavering support of SOIA athletes.
