As students head back to school, from elementary classrooms to college campuses, a troubling trend continues. Research shows that 92% of young people who have heard the “R-word” say they first heard it used as a slur. Through its Spread the Word campaign, Special Olympics is working to change that by encouraging more respectful and inclusive language. Andrea Cahn, Senior Vice President of Unified Champion Schools, joined Melissa in the Morning to talk about the campaign, what the data tells us, and how schools can help create more welcoming environments for all students. For Fima, life hasn’t always been easy. After losing his job, he struggled with confidence and self-esteem. With the support of his coach, Susan David, and Special Olympics Athlete Leadership, he found a renewed sense of purpose. 💙 Fima became a Special Olympics Health Messenger and Fitness Captain in 2024. Through these roles, he discovered a passion for helping others live healthier lives. ⭐️ By leading warm-ups and cool-downs and teaching others about nutrition, hydration, and mindfulness, he has become a health and wellness leader within his community. Today, he uses that newfound confidence to help fellow Special Olympics athletes be the best they can be, both on and off the field. ➡️ Read Fima’s inspiring journey in the latest edition of Renee’s Corner: https://brnw.ch/21x4TEB #SpecialOlympics #InclusiveHealth

Young people are not only participants in inclusion in education. They help lead it. Through Unified Champion Schools®, young people with and without intellectual disabilities build relationships, take on leadership roles, and help shape school communities where more students can participate and belong. Through the work of the Special Olympics Global Center for Inclusion in Education, 2,831 Unified Champion Schools® have been supported globally, more than 1.1 million young people have been engaged, and 19,425 coaches and educators have been trained. These figures reflect growing opportunities for young people to contribute their ideas, lead alongside their peers, and influence the culture of their schools. Reflecting this year’s #YouthDay theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” we recognize young people as essential partners in advancing inclusion in education and their shared aspiration to participate, contribute, lead, and belong. #GlobalCenterForInclusion #SpecialOlympics #FromAbuDhabiToTheWorld
