Stress is an unavoidable part of leadership—but how leaders respond to it can make all the difference. A recent Harvard Business Review article explores how effective leaders can harness stress rather than simply trying to eliminate it. The key is understanding our default reactions under pressure and developing the flexibility to respond thoughtfully, make better decisions, and stay effective when challenges arise. For leaders, managing stress isn’t just about personal well-being. It can influence decision-making, team dynamics, and the ability to navigate uncertainty. Learning to work with pressure instead of being overwhelmed by it can be a powerful leadership skill. Ever wonder if that interview really came down to your answers... or something else entirely? Research says interviewers form an impression within 30 seconds — often before a single question gets asked. Psychologists have found people can judge trustworthiness and competence from a face in a fraction of a second, and those snap judgments are shockingly hard to shake. The good news: this cuts both ways. Candidates can walk in more intentionally (posture, pace, eye contact matter more than you'd think). And hiring managers can build guardrails — structured questions, notes on behavior instead of "vibes" — so a gut reaction doesn't quietly become the whole decision. Turns out the "grass is greener" job change isn't really about the paycheck. A new BLS study found that interest in the actual work — not salary, not benefits — is the biggest predictor of whether someone feels their new job is better than their old one. An improvement in how interesting the work feels boosts the odds someone rates the job as "better overall" by 27%. Pay still matters, obviously. But if the day-to-day work itself isn't engaging, a bigger salary alone won't be enough to keep people around. Skipping lunch to power through the day feels productive, but it's actually a fast track to burnout. This Forbes piece makes the case for treating your midday break as a non-negotiable — stepping away from the screen instead of eating at your desk between emails — to reset your focus and energy for the afternoon ahead. Small shifts in how we manage energy (not just time) can make a big difference in team performance and wellbeing. Read more: https://lnkd.in/g3nApGyt
