International students are more than a source of tuition revenue, they are a critical driver of innovation, research, workforce development, and economic growth. As new international enrollment declines, our latest policy brief, Investing in Talent: A National Strategy for International Students and U.S. Economic Leadership, argues that the challenge is not demand for U.S. education, but policy. The U.S. remains the world's most attractive destination for global talent, but maintaining that position requires a coordinated national strategy. The demand is there. The capacity is there. The quality is unmatched. The choice is ours. As we wrap up #NAFSA2026, we're reflecting on an incredible week of connections, conversations, and collaboration! Our team met with outstanding partners, spent time on campuses, attended thought-provoking sessions, and engaged in important discussions about the future of international education. Along the way, we shared plenty of laughs, made new connections, strengthened existing ones, and even had a few moments where some of us got to feel like royalty! 👑 Thank you to everyone who helped make this year's conference such a memorable experience. We’re leaving inspired, energized, and excited about the work ahead. Until next year, NAFSA! #InternationalEducation #NAFSA #StudyAbroad #GlobalEducation #Shorelight

Policy & Advocacy in International Education: The View from Washington Important conversations today at NAFSA around the current policy and advocacy landscape in international education. While challenges remain, including Duration of Status, visa appointment delays, uncertainty around OPT, and ongoing policy shifts, there was also cautious optimism from leaders across the field. One encouraging takeaway: we are beginning to see stronger bipartisan engagement in Congress around the value of international education, exchange programs, and global talent. Advocacy efforts ARE making a difference, and new legislative initiatives and caucuses focused on international exchange continue to gain momentum. The message throughout the discussion was clear — continued collaboration, creative advocacy, and engagement across education, business, and government will remain critical as we work to support international students and protect the future of U.S. global competitiveness. #NAFSA2026 #InternationalEducation #EducationPolicy #StudentAdvocacy

𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: 𝗔 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗮 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 Trends in student visa approvals and denials reveal the health of the #internationalstudent ecosystem and higher education in the United States. In our latest report, Shorelight analyzes ten years of student visa data and finds a concerning shift: denials are not only rising—they are becoming structurally concentrated in key regions, particularly across the Global South. These are not short-term fluctuations, but sustained patterns with far-reaching implications for colleges and universities, local economies, and communities nationwide. This analysis builds on our 2023 report, An Interview of a Lifetime, developed in collaboration with the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration. Together, these reports offer actionable insights for institutions and policymakers navigating an increasingly complex global landscape.
