RIMPAC 2026, the world's largest international maritime exercise, brought together allies and partners from across the Indo-Pacific. Aboard USCGC Kimball, V-BAT flew alongside the U.S. Coast Guard and Philippine Coast Guard in a joint search and rescue exercise. V-BAT located and tracked two simulated stranded vessels, guiding rescue crews to the scene. In transit, V-BAT also extended the crew's awareness by scanning for vessels of interest ahead of the strike group. Autonomy for the world. The greatest victory requires no war. How can Australia generate operational mass without possessing mass? At the 2026 ASPI Defence Conference, Dr Shannon Zimmerman was joined by Air Vice-Marshal Nicholas Hogan CSC, Head of Air Force Capability in the Royal Australian Air Force; His Excellency Vasyl Myroshnychenko, Ambassador of Ukraine to Australia; and Mark Palmer, Vice President of Vision Systems at Shield AI, to discuss how Australia can generate operational mass across the vast and increasingly contested Indo-Pacific. The panel explored how AI-enabled and autonomous systems can generate greater operational mass and military effect without requiring a comparable increase in personnel or traditional crewed platforms. Operating effectively in communications-denied environments, these capabilities also have the potential to increase resilience and accelerate decision-making in future conflict. Drawing on operational lessons from Ukraine, the speakers emphasised that autonomy must be trusted, adaptable and integrated with human decision-making. Technology alone is insufficient.
