    A crash notification came through on RapidSOS. Officer Kevin Betancourt got an alert with a verified location and launched a drone. 27 seconds later, he had eyes on the scene. A USPS mail truck had rolled down an embankment near a golf course, struck a storm drain, and landed in the brush. Mail was scattered across the ground. The driver was upright and moving. For the World Cup, Atlanta agencies worked from one shared real-time information layer, dispatchers fielded calls in dozens of languages, and command staff watched the same picture without setting foot in the room.     APCO 2026 is officially in the rearview, and after a week in San Antonio, one thing is clear: this industry is moving quickly. With APCO International’s membership now topping 45,000, there were a lot of voices in the room and some important conversations about where emergency communications go next. Across sessions, meetings, and conversations, a few themes kept coming up: 🟢 The AI conversation is getting more practical. The question is moving beyond whether AI belongs in public safety. Leaders are asking better questions: How is it governed? How transparent is it? What problem is it actually solving? And what should an agency understand before putting it into a mission-critical environment? 🟢 NG911 still requires all of us to build toward the same future. Federal partners, including the FCC, NTIA, and the NHTSA 911 Program Office, reinforced something this community knows well: modernizing 911 depends on agencies, jurisdictions, technology partners, and policymakers working together. 🟢 More emergency data is reaching 911 without waiting on a traditional voice call. That shift was visible across APCO. Connected vehicles can send critical crash data. School safety systems and commercial alarms can alert 911 directly. Drones can launch while an incident is still unfolding. And data can move directly into the systems telecommunicators already use. For RapidSOS, that last piece hits close to home. It’s what the Safety Network is already enabling today: critical data moving directly from its source to 911 and first responders, helping give them more information when it matters most. APCO was a powerful reminder of how far this industry has come and how much is possible when 911, public safety, and technology move forward together.

    We’ve turned “AI” into a catch-all term, and I think it’s causing us to ask the wrong questions. We talk about AI as though it’s a single technology. It isn’t. Saying “we’re going to use AI” is about as useful as saying “we’re going to build it with wood.” Are you building a workbench? A dining table? A deck? They’re all made from wood, but you’d choose different materials, different tools, and different techniques depending on what you’re trying to accomplish. Every choice involves tradeoffs. One of my biggest takeaways from Zach LaValley’s #APCO2026 session, Reality vs. Hype: How to Build (and Trust) Mission-Critical AI, was that understanding AI means understanding those tradeoffs. Some AI models are optimized for speed. Others for accuracy. Others for reasoning, cost, or processing large amounts of information. There isn’t a single “best” AI, there’s only the best AI for a particular problem. But choosing the right AI is only part of the decision. You also have to decide how it fits into the workflow. Is it surfacing information for a telecommunicator to consider? Making recommendations that a person reviews? Automating repetitive administrative tasks? Reviewing thousands of calls for quality assurance? Each approach changes the balance between speed, oversight, accountability, and operational risk. That’s why I don’t think the question is, “Should we use AI?” I think the better questions are: * What problem are we trying to solve? * Which AI is the right tool for that problem? * What role should AI play in the workflow? * What tradeoffs are we willing to accept? Those feel like much more interesting (and much more important) questions for public safety.

  • By the time a home invasion call reached deputies in Washoe County, the information had already passed through three people. That's not a knock on anyone in that chain. It's just how 911 has worked for decades: caller to dispatcher to deputy, with something lost at every handoff. Lt. Joshua Jenkins and the Northern Nevada Regional Intelligence Center changed the sequence. Harmony AI now transcribes 911 calls in real time, so deputies get the call as it happened, not a summary of a summary. The difference showed up fast. Drones now launch 15 to 20 seconds after a decision is made, and the center reports they reach the scene ahead of ground units in 70% of calls. On day one of using the system, it gave deputies enough live detail to track a home invasion suspect and make the arrest without anyone getting hurt. Deputies used to work from a few seconds of secondhand description. Now they're working from the real thing. Connectivity saves lives.   • Across 11 U.S. cities and 38 days, the 2026 World Cup generated 33,704 emergency calls without a single mass casualty incident. FBI Director Kash Patel described it as running the equivalent of 78 Super Bowls back to back. What made it work was coordination across jurisdictions, real interoperability between agencies that historically stayed in their own lanes, AI-powered tools like real-time translation, and real-time location data in the hands of 911 professionals who knew how to use them. At MetLife Stadium, match days ran at 10 times normal call volume, and the system held. The World Cup is over, but none of that infrastructure was built just for a tournament. The same capabilities apply to any large-scale event: a marathon, a music festival, next year's Super Bowl. The agencies that plan around them now will be the ones ready when the crowd shows up.   • Two years ago, RapidSOS made an unusual hire for an AI company: a service dog. 🐕💙 Since then, Chief has logged 20,000 miles. He has visited ECCs, fire departments, and police stations in all four quarters of the United States to provide a moment of calm for people whose work rarely offers one. It's an easy thing to overlook in a company built around AI and data. But the technology only matters if it's built with real respect for the people using it, and sometimes the clearest proof of that isn't in the product at all. It's a dog showing up on a hard shift.
