Quantum networking worked in the lab for decades. But real-world fiber is noisy, chaotic, and unpredictable, and it degrades quantum signals every time. Qunnect built hardware specifically to solve that fiber problem with Carina's polarization compensation system, which continuously corrects for real-world conditions. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) showed this year that Carina preserves quantum signals across some of the most demanding urban infrastructure in the world. And now the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) just awarded Qunnect new funding to advance the next generation of that same system. Qunnect has focused on not only advancing the science behind quantum networking but also developing the technologies needed to make it useful at scale. Building quantum networking for a data center is one challenge. Building for satellites, remote infrastructure, and networks stretching across much longer distances is another altogether. In 2024, Qunnect became the first company to deploy a commercially available full turnkey entanglement distribution platform inside a third-party data center. And today, we're taking it further, partnering with Monarch Quantum to build smaller, more deployable versions of our hardware as we take quantum networking across the world and beyond. A pigeon on a wire is a real threat to quantum entanglement. Quantum networking has to survive it anyway. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) outlines on their latest blog post how they sent entangled photons through 62 kilometers of fiber strung above Maryland streets, using Qunnect's polarization-stabilization hardware to hold the entanglement together through wind, sun, and everything else the real world threw at it. The result: 92.8% of photons stayed entangled over a full day, in exposed, above ground conditions NIST physicist yicheng shi called a stress test for quantum networking. Real quantum networks won't run through sealed labs. They'll need to survive on the same exposed, unpredictable infrastructure the internet already does. This is the year of quantum. And New Mexico is building the quantum future. ABQ-Net welcomed more than just its first four commercial companies last week, proof the network is already doing real work. We also welcomed staff from Senator Martin Heinrich and Representative Melanie Stansbury's offices who came to tour the nation's only open-access, entanglement-based quantum network. Adriana Reyes Newell from Bandelier Technologies, one of those first four companies, showed them the quantum imaging work they're building on the network right now. Quantum security is advancing in New Mexico on ABQ-Net. Aliro is on the network this week demonstrating quantum secure communications, marking the first entanglement-based commercial QKD system running across long-haul aerial fibers in the U.S.. The joint demonstration showcases real-time secure key generation, clock synchronization, and active intrusion detection—all in one stack, operational over 50 km of deployed fiber.
