A tradition six years in the making. This year, our Atlanta studio’s Backpack Bash brought together more than 200 volunteers to raise $60,000 for students at Mableton Elementary School. The funds provided backpacks and school supplies to help students start the year strong, with the remaining $10,000 donated directly to the school to help fund lunches and field trips throughout the year. Together, the effort was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when a community comes together. This week, Canada Laboratories launched construction of the Regulatory and Security Sciences Hub, Main Facility, located in Ottawa (RSS Main). This new facility is designed to integrate federal scientific capabilities to protect human and animal health, enhance border security, stimulate the economy, and support international trade. Designed by the Provencher Roy and Perkins&Will consortium, in collaboration with Smoke Architecture Inc. and the engineering firms AtkinsRéalis, BPA, and Introba, the project is overseen by PCL Construction. It pursues four primary objectives: reducing vulnerabilities in food, animal, and plant health; strengthening emergency preparedness; stimulating economic growth; and promoting innovation and regulatory coherence. The building, targeting LEED Gold certification and net-zero carbon performance, will house laboratories for the CFIA, CBSA, Health Canada, and the Public Health Agency of Canada. Managed by Public Services and Procurement Canada | Services publics et Approvisionnement Canada, it will replace aging facilities, thereby improving safety, quality, and resilience. The next generation of campuses isn't expanding outward—it's building upward. In cities where land is limited and real estate comes at a premium, the future of higher education is increasingly vertical. At UC Law San Francisco The Academe at 198, a 656-unit residential tower reimagines the traditional campus by integrating student housing, academic spaces, event venues, retail, and shared amenities into a single urban hub. The building also reflects a unique housing model, welcoming graduate students from partner institutions to create a multidisciplinary community where future lawyers, physicians, business leaders, and other professionals can learn from one another. The result is a vibrant vertical campus that strengthens connections among students, faculty, and the surrounding neighborhood—demonstrating how integrated design can help universities thrive in dense urban environments. Kaiser Borsari Hall at Western Washington University is now a certified Zero Energy and Zero Carbon project! Not only does this set a new benchmark for sustainable construction on campus, but the achievement also helped prompt a shift in legislative requirements, allowing Living Future certifications as an alternative to LEED for state-funded projects. Designed as a “living laboratory,” Kaiser Borsari Hall makes sustainable strategies visible through exposed infrastructure, flexible labs, photovoltaic panels, and advanced battery storage. The building gives students the opportunity to learn firsthand about innovative materials and energy technologies—turning the building itself into a tool for education and discovery. Congratulations to Joan Blumenfeld on receiving the 2026 Harvard University Graduate School of Design Alumni Award, recognizing her distinguished career and leadership in helping build a more diverse and inclusive design profession. During her 20 years with our firm, Joan, our first Firmwide Interior Design Director, grew our interiors practice to more than 400 designers and led award-winning projects across the corporate, higher education, and institutional sectors worldwide. From a declining 1970s mall to an educational anchor. Today, the 700,000-square-foot campus for the Austin Community College Highland Campus brings together specialty programs in health sciences, culinary arts, advanced manufacturing, performing arts, and digital media. From nursing simulation suites and teaching kitchens to manufacturing labs, theaters, recording studios, and dance studios, these industry-caliber learning environments prepare students for the region's high-demand careers. The adaptive reuse project was recently recognized with an Americas Award for Excellence from Urban Land Institute. As one of just nine winners across the Americas, the LEED Gold-certified campus demonstrates how reimagining existing buildings can create lasting value for communities while advancing sustainability. More than a decade after the demolition of Candlestick Park, the former stadium of the San Francisco Giants and 49ers, the iconic site is entering its next era. This September, FivePoint Holdings, LLC plans to break ground on the first phase of a 270-acre development, which will ultimately deliver more than 7,200 homes, offices, shops, and parks on the former Candlestick Park site. We helped shape the master plan for the Candlestick Center Innovation District, creating a vision for a vibrant and walkable hub of employment, entertainment, recreation, and housing. Designed with flexibility in mind, the plan supports a mix of uses that can adapt to evolving market needs while thoughtfully orienting buildings to maximize views of the San Francisco Bay.
