With AI infrastructure, we often talk about what gets built: datacenters, energy projects, and all the other skills and resources needed to support AI and the cloud services people rely on every day, from education and healthcare to banking, shopping, and staying connected. But we're also thinking about how communities can be stronger because we build there. Reading our new Community Energy Impact Report, I’m reminded the answer looks different in every community. In Chicago, energy-efficiency upgrades help lower household energy costs. In Virginia, a community resilience hub now has solar and battery storage, so it stays running during emergencies. In Maryland, workforce training opens doors to jobs in the energy sector. And around the world, 39 Microsoft Datacenter Academy programs help people build hands-on skills for careers supporting cloud and AI infrastructure. These investments are all created in partnership with communities and shaped by local priorities. No single project transforms a community. But together, these efforts show how responsible infrastructure growth creates more lasting benefits when communities help shape the outcomes from the start. As we continue to build AI infrastructure, speed and scale can't be the only measures of progress. The hardest part of community solar is not always the solar. It is everything that has to happen after a customer signs up. That was one of my biggest takeaways from my conversation on the Green Giants: Titans of Renewable Energy Podcast with Sandhya Murali, Chief Strategy & Marketing Officer at Perch Energy. We talked about the operating layer most people never see: 🔵 Enrollment 🟢 Billing 🔵 Crediting 🟢 Utility coordination 🔵 Customer support 🟢 Compliance 🔵 Low-income access The promise is simple: Help more people save money and participate in clean energy. But making that promise work month after month takes serious operational discipline. Sandhya has lived this from multiple angles: capital markets, co-founding Solstice, expanding access for renters and low-to-moderate income households, and now helping lead strategy and marketing at Perch.
