Our First Payload Commerce Build: Lessons from Launching Project96Workwear.com At Keen Studio, we've built many ecommerce experiences using several popular platforms, and we recently completed our first build using Payload Commerce, and it gave us an early look at what modern, open-source commerce platforms can offer. --Why Payload Commerce? Our team has been developing with Payload CMS for several years, and it has become a preferred solution for projects requiring flexibility and custom functionality. Project 96 Workwear needed features that would have been difficult to implement cleanly on traditional ecommerce platforms without multiple plugins or workarounds. Because Payload Commerce is built on Next.js and integrates directly with Stripe, we were able to build the platform around the client's needs rather than forcing those needs into an existing framework. --Design and Development Freedom One of the biggest advantages was the freedom it provided our UI/UX and dev teams. Without being limited by themes or template structures, our designers were able to fully capture the Project 96 Workwear brand. At the same time, our developers could work within a modern Next.js environment while maintaining complete control of the codebase. --Early Adoption As one of the first agencies to launch a production site on Payload Commerce, we expected a few bumps along the way. While we encountered some minor issues, the Payload team was responsive, collaborative, and quick to help resolve them. Their support played an important role in the project's success. --Speed and Flexibility Despite working with a relatively new commerce platform, we met an aggressive launch timeline and delivered the site on schedule. Since launch, Payload's open-source architecture has made it easy to evolve the platform as new business needs emerge. Rather than relying on plugin vendors or marketplace solutions, we can extend the platform directly. --Final Thoughts Payload Commerce won't be the right fit for every project. For businesses seeking a standardized ecommerce solution, platforms like Shopify definitely remain viable options. However, for brands that need deep customization, modern development workflows, and complete control over their platform, Payload Commerce might be the right call. For us at Keen Studio, this latest build demonstrated that Payload CMS is a serious contender in the ecommerce space, and we're excited to see where it goes next.
