Powering the Next Era of AI: How Google, Microsoft and Nvidia Are Standardizing and Accelerating the Industry Transition to LVDC Three of the world’s largest AI infrastructure builders are collaborating within OCP to establish 800 VDC as the open, standardized power architecture for next-generation AI data centers and to make sure the entire industry can adopt it safely, at scale. AI infrastructure is entering a new power era. As models become more capable and inference demand grows, AI accelerators are being deployed in denser, more tightly coupled systems. Those systems require more power per rack, more coordinated facility design and a power distribution architecture that can scale without forcing every operator or supplier into a custom design. The industry is converging on 800 VDC because higher-voltage DC distribution can move more power with less conductor/copper than lower-voltage alternatives. That matters as AI rack densities rise. Lower current can reduce cable and conductor burden, simplify distribution and create a more practical path for high-density AI deployments. Google, Microsoft and NVIDIA are working through OCP with the broader power, cooling, facility and infrastructure ecosystem to align on common 800 VDC requirements. The goal is not a single prescriptive design. The goal is a common set of interfaces and system requirements that lets operators deploy safely, suppliers build interoperable products and the industry move faster together. He has been one of the driving forces behind the OCP Storage Project and has played a critical role in numerous storage-related contributions. Ross also founded and continues to lead the OCP Storage Tech Talks virtual event series, now entering its seventh year. How long have you been involved with OCP? Ross has been volunteering with OCP since 2022. Why do you volunteer your time to OCP? Ross believes OCP provides a unique environment for industry collaboration. He values the flexibility of the community and its ability to bring together ideas, technologies, and organizations in ways that other industry forums often cannot. What impact has OCP had on you professionally? For Ross, collaboration leads to better solutions and ultimately better products. OCP provides opportunities to learn from experts across the industry, gain new perspectives, and work collectively on real-world challenges. What are you most excited about right now? Ross is energized by the growing interest in storage technologies. He recently saw more than 900 registrations for an 2026 OCP Storage Tech Talks in May and is excited to see continued momentum across the storage ecosystem. Something people may not know about you? Don’t miss tomorrow’s OCP Educational Webinar: Breaking Through the AI Network Wall with High-radix Switching Date: July 28, 2026 Time: 12 - 1pm ET Location: Virtual (ON24) The “network wall” has become one of the primary bottlenecks in large-scale AI training and inference. While compute FLOPS have doubled every 18 months, merchant Ethernet switch ASIC capacity and radix (the number of compute devices that can be connected) has historically doubled in steps longer than two years. State-of-the-art switches support ~100 Tbps today and are only expected to reach ~200 Tbps by 2028. Switch radix in turn limits the single-hop domain size, which either limits the scale or extends the training time of sparse Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) models. A new switch technology and network architecture is required to deliver an order-of-magnitude increase in radix, breaking the network wall, and enabling AI to scale more effectively.
