Governance of AI agents is an urgent challenge facing today’s enterprises. In my conversation with Blake Brannon, Chief Innovation Officer at OneTrust, he detailed a nested strategy that uses “guardian agents” to provide guardrails for “business agents.” At the heart of the approach are agents whose roles are deliberately independent of one another—and clearly defined by a human-created compliance layer. “I think of it as guardian agents that sit in an architecture where you have nested layers of roles. You have a guardian agent that, by design, you want separate from the business agent that's doing something.” “The business agent has this open charter: here's your objective, go solve and do this. The guardian agent has a much more focused charter: given this action I'm seeing, given the intent and context of why it's wanting to do that, is this [business agent] adhering to a desired action from an organization's policies.” With OneTrust’s focus on AI governance, Brannon provided a deep dive into the techniques involved in governing agentic AI—and why enterprises may need an entirely new control architecture to manage autonomous agents.
