Researchers at ORNL and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville took an important step toward autonomous laboratories: using AI to guide data collection in real time during an experiment. The experiment involved mapping residual strain inside a 3D printed metal component used in turbines and aerospace machinery, and the research team had AI continuously evaluate incoming data to suggest where the beamline should collect measurements next. Growing our understanding of plants! Scientists at DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory are taking images of plants with special cameras that capture hundreds of channels. Each channel represents a specific wavelength of light that reveals different information on the plant. Researchers recently developed a new method that doubles processing speed while using 75% less memory. It's a key step towards developing an AI model that will run on Frontier at Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, the world's first exascale computer.
