We're hearing the term "food noise" a lot more these days, but the science behind what's actually happening in the brain is still catching up. It's great to see other researchers referencing our CEO Geoff Cook's research in Cureus Journal of Medical Science, which digs into the mechanisms behind something so many people are feeling. “Food noise” is now in the lexicon, but we barely know what it is, how to measure it, or what’s happening in the brain when it manifests. So I was glad to see this paper from Alexandra Brewis, Daisuke Hayashi, MS, and colleagues. I've been following Hayashi since he published a model of food cue reactivity for studying food-related cognition. This latest paper maps the most promising areas of future food noise research. Millions of people are already using the phrase “food noise” to describe something they probably didn't know they had until it went away. The science is now catching up to the vocabulary. I'm grateful the authors cited my recent paper, where I framed food noise as a form of maladaptive prospection, linked to default mode network activity and reward-related neural circuitry. Of course, such a framing needs to be tested. Be sure to check out Table 3 in their paper, which raises important food-noise-related research questions across a number of key domains.
