WCOSS is moving to the cloud! As NOAA advances its weather forecasting capabilities, our high-performance supercomputing operations will move to Google Cloud by December 2027. This transition of NOAA’s Weather and Climate Operational Supercomputing System (WCOSS) supports current and future improvements to NOAA’s suite of weather forecast models. The move will result in a modeling system that is more flexible and easy to update, laying the foundation for NOAA to become the world leader in numerical weather prediction. Ultimately, the weather forecasting community, emergency managers and the public can expect to see earlier and more precise forecasts and warnings for extreme weather events. We’re reinventing training and have prepared 200+ employees with our new NWS Academy courses! The NWS Academy serves as the initial training ground for our workforce. Designed to accelerate the path from recruitment to readiness, it ensures the continuity of our 24/7 mission. At the NWS Training Center in Kansas City, MO, all new employees take a 1-week NWS Foundations course. That’s followed by an additional 1-3 weeks of specialized training, where they learn to apply job-specific concepts and skills through courses designed for Electronics Technicians, Meteorologists, Hydrologists, and Management. The first two cadres of trainees to complete the new program got first-hand experience, not just preparing for their roles in NWS, but with the active weather they’re passionate about. This inspired their cadre names, which were created as a team building challenge given by NWS Director Ken Graham: Cadre 26-1: The Frozen Chosen earned their title after braving brutal cold and winter weather during their training stint. Cadre 26-2: The Hail Raisers were onsite for a damaging hail storm, during which one NWS Training Center employee reported 3.5” hail at their home! Trainee feedback for the program has been overwhelmingly positive, emphasizing its content, relationship-building, and career development. These courses will continue to evolve as the NWS improves and grows in how it prepares its workforce to protect life and property in the communities they serve.
