Updates

  • Newhouse Court Advocates Kylie and Mahrukh recently traveled to Austin, TX, for the National Conference on Domestic Violence, hosted by National Domestic Violence Hotline. Over three days, they connected with advocates from across the country, learned from impactful speakers, and explored new ideas for supporting survivors and those who serve them. They especially appreciated the conference’s incorporation of live arts, demonstrating how art can help in healing; and wellness activities for those who work directly with survivors. They found meaningful opportunities to build community, share stories, and recharge together. We’re grateful to Kylie and Mahrukh for bringing what they learned back to Newhouse and continuing to grow in their work supporting survivors. 💜

  • 📺Watch the story on KSHB41: bit.ly/45kLUjY In case you haven’t heard, our AC went out earlier this week! We scrambled to find an immediate solution and were able to get temporary, portable AC units into every resident room by Monday evening (a HUGE THANK YOU to those who donated and supported!). But we’re still facing a $75,000+ repair bill to fix our main unit to get back to 100%. We’re so grateful to Lily O'Shea Becker and KSHB / KMCI / The EW Scripps Company for coming to Newhouse to cover and share this story. Donate: newhousekc.org/ac

  • YOU CAME THROUGH!🥹🥰 Earlier this week, our AC system broke, leaving 36 children and 25 adults living at Newhouse facing nearly 100° temperatures. We asked our community to help us raise $9,000 for portable AC units, and you exceeded our goal! Thanks to our friends at Lowe's Home Improvement in Roeland Park (big shout out to Manager Matt!) giving us a major discount, we were able to make our dollars go further and purchase the units for less than $5,500. Thanks to your generosity, every residential room got a mobile AC unit by Monday afternoon, keeping survivors more comfortable while they focus on healing. While these portable units are a great temporary solution, our larger AC system still needs major repairs and replacements estimated at $75,000 or more. If you’re able to help, we welcome your support -> newhousekc.org/ac

🥵🚨 URGENT: Our AC is Broken! Please help our residents.🚨🥵 Our air conditioning has broken down at Newhouse, leaving the 25 adults and 36 children who call our shelter home facing uncomfortable conditions in this week’s extreme heat, with more hot weather ahead. We need to immediately purchase portable AC units for our 25 shelter rooms and critical on-site offices. The cost is $5,500.* We are working to repair our full AC system, but the total cost is estimated to be more than $75,000. Part of the system may be fixed this week but it may take months for a full, permanent fix. We need a solution and your help now. Can you help us raise $5,500 for immediate relief? Any amount you can give will make a difference in helping Newhouse remain a place of comfort and healing for families who have bravely escaped abuse. 👉 Donate now at newhousekc.org/ac *Edited: We originally thought the AC units would be $9,000 but we were offered a great discount so the immediate goal is now $5,500 for emergency units.

  • 🍎 Our Back-to-School celebration was a blast for our children and families, thanks to our amazing community of supporters! We made sure every student received a backpack filled with the supplies they need, plus a gift card to pick out something special to wear on their first day. And, of course, there was plenty of fun! Our kids played games, decorated cupcakes, and hung out with Kansas City Chiefs Cheerleaders and KC Wolf! ❤️💛 Thank you to EVERYONE who donated school supplies and volunteered at this special event. We loved having volunteers from Mazuma Credit Union and our Imagine a Day Gala Committee join us! Because of you, our young survivors can head back to school with confidence, excitement and smiles on their faces. 💜📚✏️

  • A huge thank you to the 20s Community Group from Pleasant Valley Baptist Church for sorting and organizing in our clothing boutique! Your work helps create a welcoming, dignified shopping experience (at no cost!) for survivors and their families, and we're so grateful for your time, energy, and care! The work we do simply wouldn't be possible without dedicated volunteers who give back in meaningful ways. If you or your group are interested in volunteering to help survivors at Newhouse, please visit newhousekc.org/volunteer.

  • NEW story! 👉 We're proud to share an important step forward in preventing domestic violence before it escalates... Fathers for Change. This is an early intervention program that helps fathers develop healthier relationships through trauma-informed therapy, emotional regulation, parenting skills, and accountability. When people are given the tools to change, families have a greater chance to heal, children can grow up in safer homes, and future violence can be prevented. Listen to Courtney Thomas, Newhouse President + CEO, and Ryan DuPree, Newhouse Chief Impact Officer + Fathers for Change Therapist, share about the program. Thank you to KSHB / KMCI / The EW Scripps Company and La'Nita Brooks Brooks for highlighting this important work. Watch the story below to learn how Newhouse is creating safer futures. 💜 https://bit.ly/4c0GXjT

  • TIME TO VOTE! Amendment 5 will appear on Missouri's August 4 ballot, proposing the elimination of individual income tax. At Newhouse, we believe this amendment could have serious consequences for survivors and the nonprofit organizations that serve them. Survivors and families across Missouri could face higher costs on everyday necessities and food through increased sales tax, along with increased property taxes. Additionally, our organization could see a steep decline in funding because the tax credit incentives that drive many donor contributions would no longer be relevant. While lower income taxes may sound appealing, it would have serious consequences for vulnerable families and nonprofits like Newhouse. We urge Missourians to vote NO on Amendment 5 on August 4.
