  • 🔥 Between the record-warm oceans and some seriously toasty land temperatures, July 2026 was a month to remember. Here’s the breakdown: 🌍 The globe tied with 2024 as the warmest July on record, driven by record-warm oceans and above-average land temperatures. 🌍 Across the globe, areas with record-high July temperatures were widespread, spanning across portions of most continents and every major ocean basin. 🌍 The global sea ice extent was the fourth lowest for July on record. 🌍 Globally, July featured nine tropical storms, which is near average for the month.   • Record-breaking heat defined the nation this month, as detailed in our July 2026 U.S. Report. ▶️ Warmest on record: July 2026 averaged 76.9°F, the warmest month on record (1895–present) for the contiguous United States (CONUS). ▶️ Widespread warmth: Above-average temperatures covered the entire CONUS, with all states ranking in the warmest third of their July temperature records and none ranking near or below average. ▶️ Dry with regional flooding events: Despite below-average July precipitation for the CONUS as a whole, several regions experienced heavy rainfall, including major flash flooding events in the Texas Hill Country and eastern New York. ▶️ Alaska cool: Alaska had the coldest July average temperature since 2008.   • One year ago today, a massive landslide occurred along the shoreline of Tracy Arm Fjord, approximately 80 miles southeast of Juneau, Alaska. The landslide plunged into the fjord, sending a tsunami through an area with heavy shipping and boating activity. Although there were no casualties or extensive damage, the event offered scientists a valuable opportunity to study the impacts of landslide-generated tsunamis. From record-breaking ocean temperatures to a busy storm season, here’s a look at what made June 2026 a month for the history books. 🌍 The globe had its second-warmest June on record, driven by global ocean surface temperatures reaching an all-time high for the month. 🌎 Both the Arctic and Antarctic recorded June sea ice extents that ranked among their respective 10 lowest extents on record. 🌏 Global tropical cyclone activity was above average with seven named storms.   • June was quite a roller coaster! From historic heatwaves and record-setting tornados across the Midwest to some major rainfall in Hawai‘i, here’s a snapshot of the U.S. highlights from June 2026: ▶️ Widespread June Warmth: The average temperature for the contiguous U.S. (CONUS) in June ranked in the warmest third of the 132-year record, with much of the West, Southwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast observing above-average temperatures. ▶️ Hot and Dry Year-to-Date: The West and Southwest regions experienced their warmest January–June period on record and received less than 70 percent of their average year-to-date precipitation. ▶️ Midwest Severe Weather: According to NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center, there were 374 preliminary tornado reports during June, with historic activity across the Midwest. Illinois (91 reports), Indiana (69 reports) and Missouri (32 reports) each set new June records. ▶️ Drought Footprint: Drought coverage across the CONUS fell below 50% in June, though drought persisted across much of the interior West and developed in Puerto Rico. ▶️ Hawai’i Precipitation: Following its wettest June since 1997, Hawai’i’s year-to-date precipitation reached a record 54.6 inches—more than two feet above normal.   • Checking in on May 2026! 👀 The data are in, and May 2026 was definitely one for the record books—officially ranking as the second-warmest May on record for our planet. 🌡️ Here are the quick highlights from this month’s global report: ▶️ May was the second-warmest on record for the globe. ▶️ The Northern Hemisphere snow cover extent tracked slightly below average for May, driven by lower-than-normal extent in Eurasia. ▶️ Both poles had a top-10 low sea ice extent, with the Arctic recording its second-smallest extent on record for a third consecutive month. ▶️ Only two named storms formed globally, resulting in below-average tropical cyclone activity.   • Hey Weather Watchers! ☀️ Did you feel the heat this spring? The latest monthly stats are in, and the U.S. has been serving up some steaming hot weather. Key Takeaways You Need to Know: ➡️ Widespread spring warmth: More than half of the states experienced a spring (March–May) that ranked among their three warmest in the 132-year record, with Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Texas each recording their warmest spring on record. Meanwhile, Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania each ranked in the coldest third of their records for May. ➡️ Dry start to the year: Despite regions of above-average precipitation, the contiguous U.S. (CONUS) recorded its sixth-driest January–May on record and its driest since 1988. ➡️ Drought remained widespread: Although drought conditions improved across parts of the South, more than half of the CONUS remained in drought at the beginning of June. ➡️ Hawaiʻi experienced its wettest spring: The island chain observed its wettest spring in the 36-year record, receiving more than double its average spring precipitation. ➡️ Cold spring in Alaska: Alaska experienced its coldest spring since 2013, at 2.2°F below its 1925–2000 average, contrasting with the widespread warmth across the CONUS.
