It's your money. It should serve you. Delayed federal funding = delayed services for Montanans. Over the past 18 months, MNA has heard story after story from our members about disruptions to federal grants and contracts. We've heard about NOFOs issued months after they were expected, tight grant turnaround timelines, promised money stuck in limbo, reimbursements that arrive months after documentation has been submitted, and grants pulled back after contracts have been signed and money has been spent. Nonprofits, like all businesses, need to be able to trust contracts and funding processes to be effective, especially when many have already hired staff, signed leases, and built programs around them. More than 70 organizations have signed a letter to Montana's congressional delegation, asking them to ensure that the government honors its contracts so that we can continue serving Montana communities. Request for Proposals: Indigenous Fundraising Coach MNA is looking for a coach to help us provide culturally relevant support for Indigenous fundraisers in our inaugural fundraising cohort. This coach will support two Indigenous-led organizations for up to 8 hours per month, with a total budget $8,000. We're urging Montana nonprofits to sign on to the national letter opposing the proposed changes, and to submit your own public comments about the harm that could be caused by bringing politics into the federal grant process.
🚨 BREAKING: The federal government just proposed sweeping changes that could impact funding to nonprofits serving your community. Here is what happened: A federal agency that oversees government spending proposed rewriting the rules that govern how federal grant money flows to nonprofits, food banks, health clinics, housing programs, and local governments across the country. Under the new proposal, any administration would have the power to freeze, cut, or cancel grants in the middle of a program, change the terms mid-performance, and decide which organizations receive funding based on political ideology rather than community need. What that means for real people: Disruptions to housing assistance. Gaps in health services. Vital programs losing funding mid-year. Organizations that serve the most vulnerable communities would bear the biggest impact. Nonprofits have until July 13 to fight back. Earlier this month, White Sulphur Springs had the opportunity to host one of the Montana Nonprofit Association’s Rural Community Builder Summits, and I was so proud to be part of it. The day brought together community leaders, nonprofit professionals, local partners, and rural advocates from across Montana for thoughtful conversations about what it takes to build strong, resilient communities. The turnout was incredible, and it was a good reminder that rural communities are not short on ideas, leadership, or commitment. We are often just working with limited capacity and wearing too many hats! One of my personal highlights was getting to meet my mentor, Claire Muller, in person through the Montana Nonprofit Association’s nonprofit mentor/mentee program. Having access to mentorship, statewide connections, and people who understand the nonprofit sector has already been such a valuable part of my own professional growth. It was especially fun to finally connect face-to-face. These conversations matter, especially as communities like ours look ahead and think intentionally about housing, infrastructure, natural resources, economic development, and quality of life. Thank you to the Montana Nonprofit Association, MSU Extension Local Government Center , and everyone who came to White Sulphur Springs to be part of the day. It was exciting to see our community host such an engaged and meaningful event!

Most nonprofits don't start because someone really wants to ask people for money. The mission comes first. Fundraising happens through sheer grit and determination -- often stretched across staff with other responsibilities (and passions). As your organization grows, so does your fundraising need. But it can be hard to find the capacity to bridge the gap from a scrappy start-up to a mature organization with full-time development staff and an organized, established donor stewardship plan. That's why MNA is excited to launch our first-ever Fundraising Cohort Program. This is a hands-on, collaborative experience designed to help Montana nonprofits strengthen their fundraising capacity, grow individual donor support, and build sustainable fundraising practices for the future. We've designed the program to be a sort of launch pad for midsize organizations, with peer learning and direct fundraising support from MNA Fundraising Program Director, Anna Smoot. The MNA Board & Staff gathered together in Helena this week for our annual board retreat. Among the highlights: visiting the new Florence Crittendon campus for a tour and some weed pulling, delicious Rockstar BBQ, and a LOT of truly great conversations about the work we're doing, the state of the nonprofit sector, and how we can continue to show up for Montana's nonprofits.
