Formally established as a separate department in 1920, MIT’s Chemical Engineering department (ChemE) has not only set the standard for instruction and research in the field, it continues to redefine the discipline’s frontiers. With one of three undergraduate programs focusing on chemical-biological engineering for students interested in the emerging biotech and life sciences industries, and two of three graduate programs providing an experiential course of study in chemical engineering practice in collaboration with MIT’s Sloan School of Management, ChemE at MIT is quite unlike chemical engineering anywhere else.

Every year, about 85,000 Americans are diagnosed with bladder cancer. While treatment is often successful, bladder cancer has one of the highest rates of recurrence of any cancer. Akorfa Dagadu, a senior in MIT Course 10B (Chemical-Biological Engineering) in the Department of Chemical Engineering, has been named a Schwarzman Scholar. This year’s 150 Schwarzman Scholars were selected for their leadership potential from a pool of over 5,800 applicants, the highest number in the program’s 11-year history. Schwarzman Scholars pursue a one-year, fully funded master’s degree program in global affairs at Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University, in Beijing, China. The graduate curriculum focuses on the pillars of leadership, global affairs, and China, with additional opportunities for cultural immersion, experiential learning, and professional development. Katie Galloway has been promoted from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor in the MIT Department of Chemical Engineering. Galloway’s research interests broadly include synthetic biology, molecular systems biology, stem cells, cell-fate programming, genetic control systems, and DNA supercoiling. Her lab focuses on developing gene circuits that can guide and probe cells, illuminating the systems-level principles that govern complex cellular behaviors. Galloway earned a PhD (2012) and an MS (2007) in chemical engineering from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), and a BS in chemical engineering from University of California at Berkeley in 2005. She completed her postdoctoral work at the University of Southern California Department of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine in the School of Medicine.

So proud of our own Paula Hammond, who will become MIT's first female Dean of Engineering, effective January 16, 2026
Paula Hammond ’84, PhD ’93, an Institute Professor and MIT’s executive vice provost, has been named dean of MIT’s School of Engineering, effective January 16. She will succeed Anantha Chandrakasan, who was appointed MIT’s provost in July. Hammond, who was head of the Department of Chemical Engineering from 2015 to 2023, has also served as MIT’s vice provost for faculty. She will be the first woman to hold the role of dean of MIT’s School of Engineering. She has earned many accolades for her work developing polymers and nanomaterials that can be used for applications including drug delivery, regenerative medicine, noninvasive imaging, and battery technology. Throughout her career at MIT, Hammond has helped to create a supportive environment in which faculty and students can do their best work. “Ever since enrolling at MIT as an undergraduate, Paula has built a remarkable record of accomplishment in scholarship, teaching, and service,” says Chandrakasan. “Faculty, staff, and students across the Institute praise her wisdom, selflessness, and kindness, especially when it comes to enabling others’ professional growth and success.” https://lnkd.in/er42Y56X
