Former California State Fire Marshal and Megafire Action board member Kate Dargan Marquis puts it perfectly: “As a former California state fire marshal, I know that helping homeowners reduce risk before disaster strikes is one of the highest-return investments California can make. Every home that survives a wildfire represents avoided recovery costs, a more resilient community and one less family forced to start over. “The challenge today isn’t convincing Californians that wildfire preparedness matters, it’s making sure they can afford it.” That’s exactly what SB 894 aims to do — give more California homeowners an affordable path to make proven wildfire resilience upgrades. SB 894 just cleared Assembly Appropriations, now it’s time for the legislature to pass it and fund it so Governor Newsom can sign it. The megafire crisis is solvable.
About us
Megafire Action has one mission: to end the megafire crisis within a decade. In the last 40 years we’ve seen a new type of fire emerge: Megafire. Megafires burn 100k acres or more, often with an intensity that devastates ecosystems. And they’re getting more common every year: 17 of California’s 20 largest fires have happened in the last 20 years. Megafire Action is the first organization focused solely on enacting policies to solve this crisis. We want prevention and mitigation to get the same focus as suppression and emergency response. Getting there will mean bringing good fire back into Western ecosystems and creating thousands of jobs in rural communities. We’ll also need to improve our ability to detect, track, and predict megafire behavior. Megafire is solvable, but we need solutions that meet the scale and urgency of the problem. A lot needs to happen and we’re going to hold policymakers accountable for progress.

We are one step closer to a major win on wildfire prevention in California! Today, SB 894, SB 973, and SB 1079 — three cornerstone bills in the Joint Megafire Prevention Package — cleared the Assembly Appropriations Committee and now head to the floor. These bills would make wildfire resilience more affordable, strengthen local preparedness, and accelerate the deployment of new wildfire technology. We’re incredibly grateful to the legislative leaders, wildfire experts, community stakeholders, and many others who have helped shape and advance these solutions. There’s more work ahead, but today is an important milestone. Let’s get these bills across the finish line! Last week, smoke blanketed the East Coast, shrouding the Capitol in an orange haze and sending air quality to unhealthy levels. Our founder and CEO, Matt Weiner, spoke with Natalie Fertig about how wildfires are a national crisis—not just a Western one. "Wildfire smoke—that's what it takes to get the rest of the country to pay attention to this issue that we deal with all fire season, every year." The bipartisan #FixOurForestsAct has the support to pass. What it needs now is urgency. Read Matt's interview on why Congress can't afford to wait for the next crisis to act: https://lnkd.in/gWubMVpg James Campbell Jay Balagna Teresa Feo Kayla Calkins Molly Hausmann Eric Horne Cassidy G.

Senators. Just pass FOFA. Minnesota (and Utah, and Colorado, and more) is experiencing the fire and the entire upper Midwest all the way to your offices are getting hit with the debilitating smoke. Pass the Fix Our Forests Act. It is literally sitting on your desks. It is designed to mitigate this now and build intelligence (and deploy technology) to improve what we do in the near future. The legislation is designed specifically, unequivocally, and unambiguously for this moment. It will continue happening unless we take action. Just put it up for a vote. That is all you need to do. Ending the megafire crisis starts with bringing the right people to the table. That’s why we're excited to welcome Tom Erb to Megafire Action's Board of Directors. Tom has spent his career turning ambitious climate and energy ideas into policy. As Head of Federal Affairs at Fervo Energy, he's helping accelerate the deployment of geothermal energy to deliver affordable, reliable, zero-emissions power. His experience spans Congress, international institutions, and some of the country's most important climate policy efforts. At Megafire Action, we're bringing together the people and policy solutions needed to end the megafire crisis. That means bringing together leaders who know how to challenge the status quo, build unlikely partnerships, and move big ideas from concept to reality. Tom's perspective will make us stronger, and we're excited to build alongside him. Welcome to the team, Tom! Matt Weiner Gabe Kleinman Kate Dargan Marquis Kim-Mai Cutler

Congratulations to Earth Fire Alliance and Office of California Governor Gavin Newsom on the successful launch of FireSat! 👏🌎🔥 Kudos to Earth Fire Alliance for turning a bold vision into reality, and to Governor Newsom for continuing to build on California's strong record of investing in wildfire resilience and innovation. Earlier detection means faster response, better situational awareness, and more opportunities to stop small ignitions before they become megafires. It’s a breakthrough that will strengthen wildfire resilience while giving firefighters and land managers more time and better information to decide how to act. FireSat proves that bold leadership and investment in innovation can accelerate the fight against the megafire crisis. https://lnkd.in/gA8pVFsq Joe Tyler Brian Ferguson Megan Mekelburg Muon Space Genevieve Biggs Matt Weiner Christopher Anthony Eric Horne James Campbell

The loss of the three firefighters who died battling the Knowles and Gore fires along the Colorado-Utah border is a tragedy that we cannot accept. Jay Balagna, our California policy advisor and a former federal wildland firefighter, shares his perspective: Matt Weiner Molly Hausmann Kayla Calkins Teresa Feo James Campbell Eric Horne Cassidy G.
The end of my firefighting career was spent on a helitack team like the one in Rifle, Colorado that Emily, Nick, and Sydney worked on. I didn’t know them, but I feel their loss and I know others across the wildland fire community do, as well. Everyone knows the risks of the job, but that doesn’t make news like this any easier. My colleagues and I at Megafire Action are grieving this week with their families, friends, and crewmates and thinking of the two other firefighters injured over the weekend. It reminds us why reducing wildfire risk is one of the most important investments we can make. https://lnkd.in/gUKmr2Bp
