Startups and incumbent organizations can absolutely learn from one another. In the latest episode of the Maverick Mindset, Healthier Capital Founding Partner and former One Medical CEO Amir Dan Rubin joins Maveron Partner Natalie Dillon to talk about these lessons. For startups, it's all about understanding why incumbent healthcare systems operate the way they do. Check out the Maverick Mindset today, linked in the comments.

How do you create cohesion in a healthcare startup when you’re working with doctors, engineers and administrative teams? Healthier Capital Founding Partner and former One Medical CEO Amir Dan Rubin tells Natalie Dillon in the latest episode of the Maverick Mindset that it all comes down to communication and holistic thinking. What does it actually take to transform healthcare from the inside? Our Partner Natalie sat down with Amir Rubin, former CEO of One Medical and founding partner at Healthier Capital, on the latest Maverick Mindset episode to discuss.
I sat down with Amir Dan Rubin, former CEO of One Medical, and now founding partner at Healthier Capital, to unearth some of his reflections from his time as an operator. A few takeaways that stuck: 1. Purpose then people then process (in that order, or not at all): Most teams start with org charts or tooling but the best strategy is to start with a non-negotiable outcome. At One Medical, the purpose was to create "the best patient experience anywhere, period." Everything else, the tech stack, the staffing model, the economic model, followed from that. 2. Measure the friction, then cut it in half: Amir's team literally counted clicks, because fewer clicks meant a better experience. Those changes may not seem connected to a revenue goal, but they directly shape the type of product that earns engagement (and ultimately, your top-line) over time. 3. Your economic model is a product decision, not a financial decision: One Medical didn't charge for every message or question. That decision alone changed patient behavior. 47% of members were engaging monthly (numbers that would be enviable for any consumer social app.) Ask yourself: what behaviors does your pricing model reward or punish? Design the model that produces the behavior you want. 4. Know the incumbent better than they know themselves: It’s easy to dismiss incumbents, but the founders who actually change the healthcare system take the time to map why the existing systems work the way they do: who profits, who's protected, and where the leverage points are. That knowledge is how you build something incumbents will eventually buy, partner with, or be displaced by. As a founder, you have to be as attuned to the institutions you'll embed with as you are to the consumers you're serving. 5. AI won't reduce the need for providers, it will increase it: The opportunity isn't AI vs. doctors. If AI enables truly personalized health plans at scale, we'll need more medical providers than ever to deliver on that promise, not fewer. The near-term founder opportunity is more concrete: use AI to eliminate administrative burden so that the humans in your system spend their time on what only humans can do - deliver meaningful care. Why does going direct to consumer matter? For Kat Cole, it's not just a distribution strategy, it's how you stay close to the people actually using your product. In our latest episode of The Maverick Mindset, Kat joins Maveron Partner Natalie Dillon and breaks down how the DTC model does two things at once: it keeps brands connected to their existing customers, and it opens the door to entirely new customer archetypes you might never have reached otherwise. Check it out wherever you get your podcasts.

It’s Thursday, which means we’re back with a new Substack, where we share the conversations happening across Maveron, including what’s now & what’s next, perspectives beyond the boardroom, and the long view on consumer shifts we believe will stick around for years to come. This week, Simran Suri makes the case for longevity — not for the biohacker, but for the rest of us. She argues that the brands that win the next wave of longevity won't be the ones going deepest on biohackers. They'll be the ones who take the same science, strip out the jargon, and make preventive health feel as essential as your morning coffee. From wiping down gym equipment as a teen to leading FOCUS Brands and now CEO of AG1, Kat Cole’s leadership style has evolved over her career. In our very first episode of The Maverick Mindset, Kat joined Maveron Partner Natalie Dillon and discussed how she’s learned to hold workers accountable to be the leaders they can be, rather than stepping in and taking over. “When you’re a CEO managing other Presidents and COOs, that becomes a critical skill,” Kat said. Senior living is facing enormous pressure, from staffing shortages to outdated technology. Sage is building the platform to help operators meet that moment. Since leading Sage’s Series A in 2023, we’ve watched Raj Mehra and the team build a care operating system designed for the people doing the most important work in these communities: caregivers. By modernizing how care teams coordinate and respond in real time, Sage is helping operators run better communities and deliver better outcomes for residents. We’re proud to partner with the team and excited to see the momentum continue. Congratulations to Sage on the Series C!
