A C-17 Globemaster costs roughly $340 million. It’s one of the most important cargo aircraft in the U.S. Air Force, moving troops, tanks, helicopters, and humanitarian aid around the world. Then one day it was damaged. The replacement structural part wasn’t sitting on a shelf. It wasn’t something you could order overnight. Traditionally, you’re hunting through inventory, searching the boneyard, or waiting months for a replacement while a $340M aircraft sits on the ground. And there is only 9 of them in this unit. This is where Roboforming changed the game. Working alongside the U.S. Air Force and UDRI, we Roboformed a first-of-its-kind structural repair part that has now been installed on a crewed C-17 and returned the aircraft to service. The plane took its first flight with Roboformed panel on July 30th. This is a milestone not just for Machina, but for manufacturing. It took metal 3D printing more than 25 years from commercial inception to reach crewed flight hardware. Roboforming did it in about 5. Every day an aircraft sits grounded costs readiness. Every obsolete part drives up taxpayer costs. The future isn’t warehouses full of spare parts. It’s manufacturing them on demand, where they’re needed. Huge thanks to our partners at the United States Air Force, AFRSO - Air Force Rapid Sustainment Office, and University of Dayton Research Institute for believing in a new way of keeping aircraft flying.

One of the main bottlenecks in hypersonics is manufacturing. Last week we announced Machina Bellator’s work supporting the JASSM program at Lockheed Martin. Hypersonics are another area where we’re offering a solution. Complex composite structures for hypersonics can be difficult to manufacture, inspect, and scale because they require a lot of labor. Robocrasftman's advanced metal manufacturing offers another path; one that’s faster to deploy and easier to scale. No tooling to form the body in an automated process. We’ll have our latest hypersonic vehicle on display at Space and Missile Defense Symposium in Huntsville.

Capacity gets reallocated, not stranded. The same cells for the Lockheed Martin JASSM program can run custom automotive work the next shift.

Our factories are different, and so is the work in them. What changed is the craft. Robots, data, software, an iPad instead of a wrench. The skill moved up. The person running the cell and the person who wrote the software read the same screen. Design and build happen in the same room, on the same day.
