Electric utilities have spent billions over the past decade on wildfire prevention — vegetation management, covered conductors, weather forecasting, grid hardening, public safety power shutoffs. Those investments have improved things substantially. They still can't eliminate every ignition. Join former Hawaii Public Utilities Commission Chairman Jay Griffin (The Ad Hoc Group), Pacific Gas and Electric Company VP of Wildfire Mitigation Andrew Abranches, and Seneca Founder & CEO Stuart Landesberg on August 26 for a discussion on the next frontier: not whether utilities should replace fire agencies, but how they can support and strengthen the broader wildfire response ecosystem as conditions grow more extreme. Corpus Christi, Texas was on track to become the first American city to run out of water this year. Recent floods bought it another year but with industrial users responsible for more than half of regional demand, nobody there is calling it solved. That's the backdrop every new data center announcement lands against now. A single hyperscale campus can use up to 5 million gallons a day, comparable to a town of 10,000 to 50,000 people. In places like South Texas, that water often comes from the same system residents are already being asked to ration. From liquid cooling to reclaimed wastewater systems, solutions are already being deployed at scale. Novel power systems that generate water instead of consuming it go a step further. For decades, new nuclear in the West has been stalled by the "construction problem." Multi-billion dollar megaprojects with schedule creep and labor shortages have made nuclear a financial non-starter for commercial project finance. On the latest episode of The Green Blueprint, Blue Energy CEO Jake Jurewicz talks with host Lara Pierpoint about a different approach: building nuclear plants less like bespoke civil engineering projects and more like manufactured products. Borrowing techniques from offshore oil, gas, and LNG, Blue Energy prefabricates massive modular blocks in shipyards and barges them to the final site. Jurewicz likens it to assembling Duplos rather than complex LEGO sets. The other half of the strategy: a "gas-to-nuclear" pivot, where a plant starts life as a natural gas facility before transitioning to nuclear. That sequencing generates early revenue and gives lenders a more attractive risk profile, potentially the "missing middle" that finally makes commercial project debt viable for nuclear. Loved this episode! When I was building Third Derivative, we identified the need for financial innovation throughout the capital stack, and Enduring Planet is one of the few organizations actually doing it. I'm proud to have partnered with them multiple times now - they are the genuine article and Dimitry Gershenson is a true mensch!
Climate tech companies are often pushed toward expensive equity to bridge the gap between a government grant award and the cash needed to actually get a project moving. For founders building the physical infrastructure of the energy transition, that's not always the right tool, and for many, it isn't even an option. In this episode of The Green Blueprint, host Lara Pierpoint talks with Dimitry Gershenson, CEO and co-founder of Enduring Planet, about how his company underwrites government grants and provides working capital to climate startups, solving a financing friction point that often gets overlooked. They dig into the "brutal reality" of fundraising in a volatile macro environment, and why, contrary to popular belief, Gershenson argues venture debt isn't always the wrong call either. For data center development, the binding constraint has moved from chips to grid access. Interconnection now involves three decisions instead of one: how to connect, what to build behind that connection, and how to run it once it's live. Join GridBeyond's Alden Phinney and Ben Sigrin on September 15 for a practical, numbers-first look at how data center power gets planned, built, and operated on a constrained grid. They'll cover how flexible and interruptible interconnection regimes are taking shape across U.S. markets and how to size a portfolio against a data center load. Drawing on insights for real case studies, they’ll explain how the same around-the-meter assets can earn from energy markets, ancillary services, and demand response between curtailment events. Solar and storage companies are navigating shifting policy, changing market dynamics, and rising demand for energy resilience all at once, and how they communicate through that shift is becoming its own strategic challenge. On August 12, Latitude Media's Jenna Herzog moderates a conversation with Amy Heart (Sunrun), Andy Newbold (Enphase Energy), and Keith Zakheim (Antenna Group) on how residential solar and storage leaders are approaching advocacy, messaging, and market education during a period of policy uncertainty. The conversation covers building trust with customers and policymakers, and communicating the value of distributed energy as the landscape keeps changing. 📅 Wednesday, August 12, 12:00–1:00 PM ET 🎥 Can't attend live? Sen. Thom Tillis announced last year that he won't seek re-election. He's been direct about where he thinks U.S. energy policy is failing, and he doesn't spare either party. On the latest episode of Critical Capital, Tillis talks with Crux CEO Alfred Johnson about why he sees the country's real energy problem as a failure to build policy durable enough to survive a change in administration, not a disagreement over which energy sources are right. BlocPower, a former darling of the climate tech world that electrified low-income homes, is saddled with debt and now faces restructuring. Latitude Media obtained a July 13 letter sent to investors in a BlocPower crowdfunding campaign, who now risk losing their money. The company raised more than $3 million from these campaigns. BlocPower management said they received an offer for some of its software and IP, but the sale wouldn't be enough to cover all its debt. “Given the gap between the initial offer and the total obligations owed to BlocPower’s creditors, management is simultaneously exploring a restructuring path,” it said. “This would involve working directly with debt holders — including our crowdfunding investors — to develop a viable go-forward plan for the company independent of, or in addition to, a partial asset sale.” It's the latest setback after former cofounders Keith Kinch and Donnel Baird resigned in 2024 amid fallout from partnerships with Ithaca, NY, Menlo Park, CA, and other cities. Electrification is driving load growth across the entire C&I sector, and competition is intensifying over everything from power equipment to interconnection to labor. Energy-intensive businesses without a deliberate power strategy aren't just facing higher costs — they're risking stalled projects, delayed timelines, and slimmer margins. The mainstays of a successful energy strategy are shifting too. Cost and decarbonization pathways still matter, but community sentiment and local resistance are becoming decision-making factors as well. For data center developers, that's already reality. For retail, healthcare, higher education, and manufacturing, it's the early edge of the same shift. Join Bloom Energy Chief Commercial Officer Aman Joshi and Latitude Media's Stephen Lacey for a Frontier Forum on why a multipronged energy strategy has become a business imperative across power-intensive industries — and how businesses can evaluate on-site power solutions within that broader strategy. 📅 Monday, August 17, 12:00–1:00 PM ET 🎥 Can't attend live?
