There has never been a better time to join an AI startup. And you don't have to be looking for work to take one seriously. Most of the best engineers I've hired weren't. By the time a company is "hiring publicly," the initial team is set and the early equity is spoken for. The people who actually shaped the product got in because someone made an intro long before the headlines. The standard advice is to optimize for title, or comp, or the name brand on your resume. For a lot of people that is exactly right, and I don't say that as an insult. But some people cannot make peace with that. They want to be one of the five people who decided what the thing was, not one of the five thousand who maintained it. If that's you, the calculation is different, because over a career the only thing that has ever compounded for me is what I learned and who I learned it from.
