There has never been a better time to join an AI startup. And you don't have to be looking for work to take one seriously. Most of the best engineers I've hired weren't. By the time a company is "hiring publicly," the initial team is set and the early equity is spoken for. The people who actually shaped the product got in because someone made an intro long before the headlines. The standard advice is to optimize for title, or comp, or the name brand on your resume. For a lot of people that is exactly right, and I don't say that as an insult. But some people cannot make peace with that. They want to be one of the five people who decided what the thing was, not one of the five thousand who maintained it. If that's you, the calculation is different, because over a career the only thing that has ever compounded for me is what I learned and who I learned it from. Title, comp, and brand all reset the day you change jobs. What you learned and who you know does not. Right now the fastest learning environment for builders is a small AI company with top founders, real users, and hard problems. You will touch models, data, evals, the product, the customer, and the go-to-market in the same week. And there are things you will learn there that you will never get the chance to learn at a big company, because at larger organizations you never get the chance to move out of your lane. Early in your career that is the whole education. Late in your career it is how you stay current instead of managing people who are. That's why we're doing this: Inception Studio Builds: Startup Showcase. Friday, August 21. Downtown SF. Six of our top founders, 4 minutes each. What they're building, the hard technical problems in front of them, and where they need help. Real pitches for builders, not for investors. Then we stick around and talk shop. Every company on stage is pre-Series A, either funded or generating real revenue, and hiring engineers right now. This is for engineers, designers, and GTM operators who want to join something earlier, where equity and ownership still mean something, and to meet founders who have been around the block. No recruiters, no résumé drop, no booths. The room is small on purpose, so you actually meet people worth meeting. Doors 5:00, pitches 5:30, drinks after. Registration is reviewed, so RSVP early: https://luma.com/05xw5ali

Co-founder matching events are incredible when done right. Here's one counterintuitive trick I use to make sure people actually show up: add friction to the signup. For ours, founders have to write a detailed profile and record a one-minute video about themselves. People who did it showed up 90% of the time. People who skipped it showed up 0% of the time. Effort upfront is the best predictor of participation. A huge thanks to our partner Jonathan O'Connell Jonathan Camello Jacob Canter (Crowell & Moring) for sharing your space with us. And shoutout to Patricia Liu, Bryan Smith, Cecilia Flores, Sacha Ledan for helping to advise. Stay tuned for the next one! John Whaley Mike Morris

Tokyo, round two. Boarding ZipAir to Narita for SusHi Tech Tokyo. I'll be giving a few talks on building AI-native startups and what we're seeing across the global AI ecosystem — but honestly, the part I'm most excited about is reconnecting with some of our incredible Inception Studio Japan team members: Arisa Makihara, Natsuki Tamura, and Sae Nuruki. They are at the heart of what we're building in Japan, and every time I land here I'm reminded how lucky we are to have them. If you're going to be in Tokyo between April 26 and May 4 — at SusHi Tech, around the events, or just in town — let's connect. #SusHiTech #InceptionStudio #AI #Tokyo #Japan

One of our favorite ecosystem partners to collaborate with is Inception Studio and I had such a fun and inspiring time participating in their co-founder matchmaking event! It was meaningful to see so many female founders nominated from our Second Time Founders community, alongside exceptional repeat founders, technical builders, operators, advisors, and investors coming together in such a thoughtful and high-caliber environment. The room had the rare combination of rigor, play, pressure, generosity, and genuine collaboration that makes real founder connection possible. My 3 key takeaways from the day: • The best co-founder signals show up through action, not just conversation. Watching founders build, pressure test, pitch, and collaborate under tight deadlines revealed so much more than a standard networking format ever could. • AI is moving fast, but trust, adoption, and human leadership are becoming the real bottlenecks. Many of the ideas centered around AI infrastructure, healthcare, regulated industries, agent safety, workforce transformation, and helping teams actually integrate AI into how they work. • The strongest founder rooms are intentionally curated. Inception Studio created a highly structured yet thoughtful program that empowered founders to move quickly, collaborate deeply, and see one another’s strengths in real time. I absolutely love and appreciate the leadership of Mike Morris, John Whaley, Michael Liu who have created something truly special with Inception Studio. As a nonprofit, this kind of programming is such a labor of love for the startup ecosystem and it was clear how much care, intention, and volunteer effort went into every detail. We are deeply grateful to support and collaborate with partners like Inception who are building high-trust spaces for founders to meet, create, and move ideas into reality together. Absolutely love supporting this community! John Whaley, Dana Sydorenko, Monisha Perkash, Jay Banerjee, Mike Morris, Michael Liu, Patricia Liu, Lonnissa H. Co-founder matching events are usually hit or miss. This one got a lot right. What stood out wasn’t just the caliber of people, but how quickly the room organized itself around strengths. Within minutes, teams formed and naturally split roles: * Technical builders went straight into execution * I found myself doing something different, focusing purely on idea shaping and strategy I rarely get to stay at that layer. But in this room, it worked. Everyone leaned into what they were best at, and things moved faster because of it. The idea that stuck with me most was Inner Quest: a therapy-inspired game designed to help kids process emotions in a way that actually feels engaging. That one hit close to home for me as a parent. And it’s a good example of what happens when you combine: real problems + the right people + the right environment. Appreciate Michael Liu Mike Morris John Whaley for creating a space where collaboration like this happens naturally, not forced. Curious to see what comes out of this group.

Co-Founder matching events are incredible if done well. Here's one moment I aim for that most people miss: spontaneous generosity. You have to set the stage, layer on the pressure, and have the right people in the room. But when it all comes together, the event stops being another awkward networking mixer and becomes something people actually remember. A huge thanks to our partner Dane Patterson Diana Huynh Lisa Prickril (Goodwin) for sharing your space with us. And shoutout to Patricia Liu Andrew Radin Monisha Perkash Tiffine Wang Helen Friedland Cecilia Flores Aki Ohashi Komal Rajani for helping to advise. Stay tuned for the next one! Absolutely loved participating in Inception Studio’s co-founder matchmaking event, one of our favorite ecosystem partners to collaborate with. It was inspiring to see so many exceptional repeat founders, technical builders, advisors, investors, and female founders nominated from our community come together in such a highly structured yet deeply thoughtful environment. The program made it clear that the best co-founder signals often show up through action, pressure, collaboration, and shared problem-solving, not just conversation. Huge appreciation to Mike, John, Michael, and the entire Inception Studio team for creating such a high-trust, high-caliber nonprofit program. This kind of work is truly a labor of love, and we are grateful to support spaces where founders can meet, build, and move ideas into reality together. #InceptionStudio #SecondTimeFounders #FounderCommunity #AIStartups #WomenInTech

Spent Wednesday at the Inception Studio event, and wow! What a room! So many insights about what will be building in tech over the next year!.. Every conversation I had was with someone building and exploring something extremely interesting: technical founders, operators with painful problems, repeat founders Huge thanks to Mike Morris, John Whaley, Michael Liu for curating such a thoughtful group and putting it together. And to all advisors and sponsors making this happen.
