In modern sulphide ore gold operations, the POx autoclave is controlled through a DCS with Model Predictive Control (MPC) to maintain pressure, temperature and oxygen partial pressure (pO₂) within the Safe Operating Window (SOW). Autoclaves are usually designed for about 4% sulphur, but when the over enthusiastic mining team sends through a high sulphur streak, say 18% 👀, reaction heat and oxygen demand can spike quickly. This can cause control upsets, trips and refractory stress from rapid depressurisation.
