About us
The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland is one of 12 Reserve Banks that together with the Board of Governors in Washington DC, comprise the Federal Reserve System. As the US central bank, the Fed formulates and implements monetary policy, provides payment services to commercial banks and the US government, and supervises banking institutions. The Cleveland Fed operates from its headquarters in downtown Cleveland and from two branches in Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. It employs some 1000+ people and serves the Fourth Federal Reserve District, which comprises Ohio, western Pennsylvania, the northern panhandle of West Virginia, and eastern Kentucky. The Cleveland Fed began operating in 1914 in a temporary location, and opened its current headquarters in 1923. Contrary to common misperception, the Cleveland Fed’s employees are not government employees. The Federal Reserve is an independent entity within government. It is not owned by anyone and is not a private, profit-making institution. Now is the time to act. There’s no tension in the mandate. Policy isn’t restrictive. And the longer we wait to take action to bring inflation back to our 2 percent objective, the more challenging it will be to bring it back down and the more expensive it will be for the American people. In this sixth year of elevated inflation, for Fourth District residents, it's already expensive. • For the Sandusky, Ohio restaurant owner who had to drop his building insurance after seeing the premiums triple in three years. • For the mid-sized Wooster, Ohio manufacturer that can't raise prices despite soaring input costs. • And for the Erie, Pennsylvania worker who has to tell his kids he can’t get them the ice cream they ask for because he just doesn't have any extra cash. These are the real-world consequences of elevated inflation. This is why now is the time to act. Meet Marie Baker, an information management manager in our Supervision, Credit Risk, and Statistics Department. She has been with the Bank for nine years. How do you stay motivated when faced with a challenge? “I reflect on previous situations that seemed overwhelming at the time but that I successfully navigated. This perspective reminds me that I can work through current obstacles. Building a strong network of colleagues and maintaining a solid support system at home provide valuable sounding boards when I need to explore ideas or seek guidance. Early in my career, many challenges felt daunting, but with experience, I’ve learned to see the bigger picture and approach problems methodically, one step at a time.” Have you taken on new responsibilities or projects recently? “I volunteered to colead the Regional Banking Forum in May 2026 during which CEOs and directors gathered for networking and to hear from speakers on topics such as cybersecurity, payments, and supervisory updates. It involved leading planning teams and coordinating with internal partners and external speakers, all of which certainly enhanced my appreciation for detailed project management.” Could you describe a time at the Bank that felt especially positive or meaningful? “One of the most challenging periods at (and outside) the Bank was the pandemic, which turned out to be incredibly impactful for me. I felt the Bank took exceptional care of our onsite essential employees through comprehensive benefits and support. As circumstances changed rapidly, we were empowered to leverage our experience and make timely decisions. Through that process, we learned from mistakes, adapted as needed, and built a more resilient team that became more comfortable navigating change. I wouldn’t like to repeat the pandemic experience, of course, but it illustrated how we could each employ our individual knowledge more deeply.” How do you usually spend your weekends? “Weekends are meant to be fun. I try my best to get my “adulting” done on the weeknights, so I can enjoy time with family and friends on the weekends. Fun includes going out to restaurants, breweries, concerts, sporting events, and traveling whenever possible.”
